Greenside Shots Simplified

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Last week's newsletter contained an article based on a lesson with a student that needed a power leak fix. This week's newsletter is about a student that needed a greenside swing fix, a finesse swing.

He's a senior male that I've been coaching for awhile who called me because he has been at a loss for what to do for shots from thick lies around the green.

As with most decisions in golf, there are usually an assortment of swings that a golfer may gravitate to in just about any situation.

My preference is always to keep things simple, regardless of skill level.

I had already taught him how to execute a bounce chip, so we worked on a variation of that swing from thick lies for a few swings. Here are the variations :
  1. I had him freeze his hands to minimize wrist motion (dead hands)

  2. I had him feel like he's shoving downward with his arms more than usual as soon as the bounce of his wedge contacted the ground. This makes the ball come out very high and soft, it's a very useful technique for short sided shots out of thick rough when necessary. I learned this technique from Pete Cowen, and one caveat is that you must maintain body rotation when you use this or it will fail.
For the greenside shots ranging from a few feet to 15 yards (or more), I had him use a technique that I've been teaching for years: Pick a club with enough loft to carry onto the green and simply use a putting stroke with dead hands. It's a failsafe technique that I use myself, even though I can execute a very good chipping stroke. It's simply more reliable, especially under stress.

Golfers have a habit of complicating things unnecessarily, and for the life of me I don't know why.

You can adjust your ball position for more or less check when it hits the green - back from center for more check, and forward (towards the target) from center for a more pure rollout. This obviously requires some testing (golf is a game of discovery) in practice.

Here's an excerpt from his lesson follow up comments from me.

Comments

Today we developed more chipping situation options for greenside and further shots.

Chipping stroke options

The first situation we addressed was greenside lies in deep rough. The solution was a push down bounce chip technique.
  • Effective with a good lie, not too tight and not sitting on top of the rough
  • The ball won't travel far, but it comes out high and lands soft when executed correctly.
The other situations were resolved by using a putting stroke with various clubs, depending on how much carry and run out is desired.
  • Use the "dead hands" technique
  • Clubhead toe slightly down at address
  • Stay down and through just as you would with a putt
  • Don't try to lift the ball into the air, the club will take care of that
  • Keep your body (and head) down until the ball is off the clubface
The priority with these short shot situations is to get the ball on the green and make the putt or make bogey at worst. Don't bring double bogey into play by trying to be too precise.

Make good contact, then make the putt.

Please keep me posted on your progress.

Try it, you'll like it!
