Tom's Featured Tip:
Get Ready For Outdoor Golf

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

This is an exciting time of the year, because with some luck we should be outside playing golf in about 75 days. Now is the time to start working on some swing things if you haven't done so already.

I'm going to talk swing things - not fitness things - because I passionately believe that fitness should be a part of your daily routine regardless of the weather. If that's not the case, make a change now.

I could recommend a whole laundry list of things to practice, but I'm keeping this brief so that you'll actually do them. Here's what you should work on for 20 minutes, three or four times per week:
  • Slow motion swings, paying very close attention to four things:
    1. your downswing swing path
    2. your clubface position at impact
    3. your weight distribution at impact
    4. an extended arms position in your early follow through

  • The Impact Drill With a Horizontal Hinge sometimes referred to as the Toe Up to Toe Up Drill - with AlmostGolf balls, not real balls - unless you have the space to shank one and not break anything (that happens once in awhile). Find a way do this drill somewhere. If you don't have a ball striking mat to hit off of, use a carpet remnant; if you don't have a net to hit into, use a blanket or tarp; just find a way to do this drill. Make short, abbreviated swings, concentrating on two things at impact:

    1. weight on the forward foot
    2. good forward shaft lean

This impact drill is the singlemost best drill to do on a recurring basis - not just during the winter - to keep your ball striking sharp.

  • Putt daily. Stroke putts into something every day for five minutes. Concentrate on form and keeping your head and lower body completely still. This will pay unbelievable dividends.

  • After your putting practice, make 10 fast swings with your driver inverted - gripping it by the neck, not the handle. You can swing on a baseball swing plane (flat) and get the same speed benefit as if you were swinging on your golf swing plane, which should make it easier to find somewhere to practice indoors.

  • JUST DO IT and you'll have a jump start on your buddies!

Love your practice, enjoy your golf, own your swing,

Tom

Tom's Bonus Tip:
Drive For Show - Putt For Dough

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

Drive for show, putt for dough - we've all heard that statement, but is it true?

Obviously, you won't win any sort of golf competition if you are not an excellent putter, so that skill needs to be honed - but don't neglect swing speed practice.

I saw a stat from the PGA Tour which showed a direct correlation between the length off the tee and earnings.

The moral of the story is get the most out of your drives as well as out of your putting.

Think "swing fast" not "swing hard" when you swing your driver.

Love your practice, enjoy your golf, own your swing,

Tom
