Tom's Featured Tip:
Chipping Thoughts

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

Before I get to this tip, I've just got to mention that it's coming from Florida - sunny, 90 degree Marco Island - while I'm on vacation.

I played my first full round of the year last Wednesday in Jupiter, and was relatively pleased with the results. I had three birdies, but two doubles kept me from a great score. Shot two over, but no complaints. It's just nice to swing in warm weather - plus I was playing with my son, my grandson, and two brothers. It doesn't get much better than that.

I see tips on chipping all the time, sometimes I agree with them, sometimes I don't.

Here's one that I'm not too fond of - chipping with your back foot up on it's toe.

That's a corrective drill for not having enough weight forward, but here are the problems with it:
  1. You can be up on the toe of your rear foot and still not have enough weight forward (onto the target side leg).

  2. It tends to get your weight on your toes, even if you are successful in getting your weight forward enough with this method.
Here's a better way to chip it solid every time:
  1. Set up with a narrow, open stance.

  2. Set it and forget it. Shift your head and sternum forward (towards the target side leg) so that they are just about aligned over the inside of your forward leg. This insures enough weight gets on your forward side.

  3. This is key - keep both feet flat with even weight distribution from toe to heel - even though your weight is shifted 75% or so onto your forward side. If you had twelve grapes under each foot lined up from heel to toe, you should be compressing each grape with the same amount of pressure - even though the total pressure on the forward foot would be greater.

  4. As you rock back then through for your stroke, do not allow any lateral movement with your head or uper torso. They are already set up for success, don't screw it up!

Tom's Bonus Tip:
Putting Tempo Tip

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

To develop a feel for tempo try this drill:
  • On a practice green, set up five balls so that you can stroke one putt then set up to the next ball rapidly.

  • Stroke the first ball with a short stroke, but with a specific tempo.

  • Then continue to stroke the next four putts, and make each stroke with the same specific tempo, but with a longer stroke, for each consecutive putt.

  • Repeat the process for four sets of putts and you will actually start to feel good tempo, as opposed to the feeling of a short or similar length backstroke with a forced forward stroke to increase the distance of your putt.

Love your practice, enjoy your golf, own your swing,

Tom
