Tom's Featured Tip: Lessons From The US Open

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

Although I must admit that I probably would have preferred a nail biter finish to the US Open just for the drama, I also must admit that I appreciate complete dominance in golf, and that's what Martin Kaymer accomplished last weekend as he won the US Open.

Of course I would also have preferred a US victor, but how can you not like Kaymer. He's a classy, well spoken and humble champion with a rock solid game. Nothing not to like there.

So what lessons can we take from Kaymer's game and his mental approach to the game?
  • You can still be gracious, even during the enormous pressure of a US Open. After Ricky Fowler made a great up and down early in the round, Kaymer gave him a little high five when they crossed paths as Kaymer was walking to his own putt. I thought that was pretty cool.

  • Don't take your foot off the pedal. He said numerous times before Saturday's round, then again before Sunday's round, that he planned to continue to play aggressively, not to sit on his big lead. He did, and he won going away. Play to win, don't play to not lose. Stay judiciously aggressive.

  • Choose the putter whenever you have a choice between putting and chipping. He took this to an extreme on Sunday when he putted from about twenty yards off the green, up a bank with a pretty good break,

He got it up and down when he holed a 12 footer - almost to the chagrin of the announcers. After he got it up and down, one of the commentators said that even though he got it up and down he still thought that Kaymer should have chipped it instead of putting it.

    Seriously?

Seeing is believing, take it for what it was - a great play.

  • Stay calm. This one speaks for itself. That kid - not really a kid at 29 yrs. of age - had ice water in his veins last weekend, even when he had to play from the scrub areas.

  • Take 3/4 length swings on the range with something held between your forearms to keep your elbows in and your swing connected. Kaymer was hitting balls while holding a tennis ball between his forearms; the ball was suspended from his neck with a lanyard. If you want a training aid to help you practice this way, you can buy one here: my affiliate link for the Tour Striker Smart Ball.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Driver Grip Pressure

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

If things start to go bad during your round, it's easy to gravitate to a death grip on your driver. When that happens, things usually get worse.

Here's what you should do frequently during your round to make sure that you are not gripping your driver too tight, robbing yourself of swing speed as well as causing squareness problems at impact.
  • Squeeze the club as hard as you can for three seconds, then let your grip go limp.

  • Then take your normal grip and it will feel nice and loose.
Try this, you'll like it.

Love your practice, enjoy your golf, own your swing,

Tom
