Tom's Featured Tip: Hands For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do! Looks like this is going to be a "pet peeve" issue. An issue or two ago I mentioned how I adjusted the level of my hands at address with my driver, and as a result I've been shooting one stroke either side of par ever since. The game is a definitely lot easier when you play from the fairway. I had a good laugh last Saturday when a player in my foursome remarked " sure, it's easy for you to make par when you hit it in the middle of the fairway all the time. Try making par from where I drive it!" Back to the pet peeve. I recently read an article from a swing guru who unequivocally stated that
Observe Jim Furyk's swing: hands low at address, a "too vertical" takeaway and backswing, but the club always gets delivered on plane at impact. Another case in point is my own swing problems when I was carrying my hands too high. I was pretty much an equal opportunity misdirection. Most of the time I was pushing it right, but without fade spin. Then I'd make a ball position adjustment and either pull it left or hook it left. Neither of the misses was caused by a too vertical swing plane at delivery, they were caused by compensations during the downswing for a poor hand position at setup. Note that this was not a massive setup mistake, it was small. However, small errors in the golf swing can cause major problems, and the longer the club the bigger the miss. Here's the point: there is an optimal position to carry your hands at address, and I like to use the driver as the test club to find it. When you have them placed correctly, it sets you up for a good backswing plane, everything else being equal. A good backswing plane usually sets you up for a good delivery plane. Your resulting ball flight should be straight with a very slight draw bias at the end of the flight. All of that holds true if you have a consistent delivery plane. If you are spraying it all over the place with your driver, experiment a little with your hand position at address and you'll probably find some peace of mind. And when you read golf tips, use your head before you take everything as gospel - and that goes for whoever the author is - me included. As I say at the end of every tip, "own your swing". Love your practice, enjoy your golf, own your swing, Tom Tom's Bonus Tip: 5.3 Inches For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do! Another pet peeve of mine is when announcers get it wrong on TV. Here's one that I hear all the time when you see a putted ball hanging on the lip: "one more roll and he/she would have made the putt". Technically that's true, but actually the player missed the speed by a lot, because one roll of the ball actually covers 5.278 inches! (A golf ball is 1.68 inches in diameter, do the math if you don't believe me. If you are mathematically challenged, put a dot on a ball, roll it for one full circumference and measure the start and end points). If you are constantly leaving the ball just a little bit short, try Instinct Putting for about 35% of your putting practice, and you'll find yourself getting the ball to the hole more often with your putts when you play. Don't bother buying the book, I'll save you $15.95 or so - Instinct Putting is when you look at the hole as you stroke the putt. It definitely helps you to get your putts to cover the distance, and then some.
