Tom's Featured Tip: Vision

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

I glean ideas for my newsletter articles from my own experiences, from questions that I receive from golfers, from my lessons, and from articles or books that I've read or DVD's that I've viewed.

When I get my ideas from an article, book, or DVD, most of the time I play devil's advocate for something that was written or said that I have found to be untrue or inaccurate.

This week, in the newsletter that I get from the teaching organization I belong to - the USGTF (United States Golf Teachers Federation) - an article appeared from our sports psychology consultant, Dr. Gregg Steinberg, on Vision. It was so good that I'm featuring it in this newsletter with just a couple of tweaks. Enjoy.

That is the vision for Rory McIlroy. In a recent interview, Rory did not tell the media that he wants to win more tournaments or majors, or even stay #1 in the golfing world. His vision is much greater. By winning the PGA Championship, Rory McIlroy has four majors under his belt at the ripe age of 25. But, he sees well beyond his years, as his vision is more than just to be a bright star on the PGA Tour. Rory proclaimed to the world that he wants to be the superstar of golf.

Vision boosts your commitment to excellence. Rory's vision will make him work harder every day. He will never rest on his laurels. He will dig it out of the dirt, when needed. His vision will help make his talent shine upon the golfing world.

Vision guides your destiny. This truth has been known for thousands of years. The ancient philosopher Seneca proclaimed, "When a man does not know what harbor he is sailing for, no wind is the right wind." Zig Ziglar, a present-day motivational guru, has noted that the happiest people he knows are those who are working toward a vision, whereas the most bored and miserable people are drifting along with no worthwhile objectives in mind. People who are vision-less will sail with any wind.

Vision shines our motivational light. Psychologists have discovered that when mice were placed in a tub with no way out, they would stop swimming after 45 minutes and drown. However, if the mice had a light shining upon them, they would continue to swim for an unbelievable 36 hours. Our vision will keep us swimming upstream, regardless of the obstacles we will face on a daily basis.

What is your vision for yourself in golf?

Unfortunately, most golfers don't have a clear vision and, most importantly, don't allow their vision to propel their game to the next level. Here are a few steps to create your own vision:

Step 1: Get a vision. It is that simple. Pick a vision that is challenging but something you greatly desire. Perhaps your vision is to win the club championship, make your college team, or to be the superstar of your high school team.

Step 2: Select three strategies to attain your vision. If it is to win the club championship next year, then one of your strategies might be to practice putting four times a week for 15 minutes.

Step 3: Visualize your vision as a reality. You need to visualize what it would feel like when you attain your vision. This will greatly promote your commitment to making the vision a reality.

Henry David Thoreau once stated, "In the long run, people hit only what they aim at." I would add, "We need to know where to aim."

Health, Wellness, Fitness: Featured Supplement: Awake Energy Shot

I take an Awake Energy Shot when I feel a bit tired before a round of golf, and I also take one before a strength workout.

Here's why.

I usually play golf on Saturday morning, and if I'm lucky on Sunday morning also. Our group tees of at around 6:30 am to beat the slow players to the tee. That's all well and good for playing a three and a half hour round, but sometimes it's tough to be alert when you had a late night on Friday and got about five hours of sleep.

My solution is to take one Awake Energy Shot , just before I play. It gives me an instant energy boost due to the caffeine (200mg), the amino acids , and the vitamin B it contains. And virtually no sugar means that there's no crash when the energy shot wears off about five hours later. That's actually the key difference between our product and Five Hour Energy, that plus a lower price for ours. (In addition, I eat a Choice Protein Bar at around the sixth hole to keep my mental energy consistent for the round.)

I also take one Awake Energy Shot before a strength weight workout because research has shown that between 200mg and 400mg of caffeine taken about five minutes prior to a strength workout enhances your ability to exert strength. I personally have found that to be true.

If you need an energy boost now and then, or if you lift weights, try this product out - you'll love it. . PLUS there's an added bonus: they come in two flavors - grape and orange - and they are both delicious!

Tom's Bonus Tip: Make The Big Putt

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

When you are faced with an extraordinarily important putt, have this mindset: accept no alternative thoughts to the fact that you have to make the putt and that you will make it.

Then go through your pre shot routine at your normal pace - not too fast - keep your head still and put a good stroke on the ball.
