Tom's Featured Tip: Do The Word

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

I consider myself to be widely read - which means that I read books and articles covering a variety of subjects.

Doing this allows me to delve into the treasure troves of other disciplines for ideas that I can use for my golf instruction business as well as my health and wellness business.

This week's Bonus Tip is an article from Seth Godin's blog. Wikipedia's description of Seth Godin is an American author, entrepreneur, marketer, and public speaker. I find his blog posts to be gems of wisdom.

I repeat his post here because I think it relates directly to golf self-talk, whether that be a swing key, course management, or mental preparation.

In golf instruction, how language is used to express ideas or concepts is probably the most important aspect (next to knowing your material) of being an effective teacher.

It's equally important to your self-talk as a player.

For example, when I am trying to get a student to maintain their upper body angle of inclination to the ground into their follow through, saying "maintain tilt in your follow through" sometimes - but not always - is more effective than saying "maintain your angle of inclination to the ground in your follow through."

Teaching golf is sometimes is different strokes (to a degree) for different folks, and the right words help me get the student to where I want them to be.

Here's Seth's Blog Post:

Do the word

It's possible to bend language to your will, to invest extraordinary amounts of effort and care to make words do what you want them to do.

Our culture celebrates athletes that shape their bodies, and chieftains who build organizations. Lesser known, but more available, is the ability to work on our words until they succeed in transmitting our ideas and causing action.

Here's the thing: you may not have the resources or the physique or the connections that people who do other sorts of work have. But you do have precisely the same keyboard as everyone else. It's the most level playing field we've got.

The first step is to say it poorly. And then say it again and again and again until you're able to edit your words into something that works.

But mostly, you need to decide that it matters.

Choose your self-talk and self-teach words carefully and communicate with YOURSELF effectively. Find the words that stimulate the right response for your brain and body and your game will improve.

Health, Wellness, Fitness: Thermogenesis (Fat Burn) and Protein

Disclaimer: DO NOT PERFORM ANY STRENUOUS PHYSICAL EXERCISE LIKE THE ONE LISTED BELOW, WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR DOCTOR.

Human Research

Increased Thermogenesis - Protein causes a greater increase in thermogensis (calorie burning) than either fat or carbohydrates. Research indicates that substituting out some carbohydrate (bread, pasta, sugars) from your daily intake and adding back an equal amount of protein can increase thermogensis by 100%.

Increased Fat Loss - Research has shown that a high protein diet will produce more fat loss compared to a high carbohydrate diet. In a head to head comparison the average fat loss for high protein diets was 56% greater than for a high carbohydrate diet. This is the result of a combination of increased thermogensis, increased satiety, decreased carbohydrate consumption and appetite control.
  • More Sustained Energy During the Day
  • Leaner, Tighter Muscles
  • A Faster Metabolic Rate
  • Appetite Suppression
  • Healthy Skin, Hair and Nails
  • Improved Recovery, and more

Personally I try to get enough protein into my system to repair the muscles that I use intensely during workouts, but I don't really want to be eating all day.

The solution for me on a non-weight workout day is a delicious TLS Nutrition Protein Shake mixed with skim milk and a banana once or twice a day. I have one for breakfast almost every day, and as a snack occasionally when I feel the need. A snack or meal with protein and fiber is always desirable, because as the saying goes that I use frequently as a TLS Weight Loss Coach: protein and fiber at every meal makes losing weight no big deal.

On a weight workout day, I add a delicious TLS Whey Protein Shake within thirty minutes following my workout as insurance that my depleted muscles get a quick boost of protein for repair and building.

High quality protein in a way that's easy and delicious to take. You can't beat it in my book.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Missing Putts on The High Side

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

If you are consistently missing breaking putts on the high side of the hole, you are doing one of two things:
  • You are mis-reading the break

  • You are reading the break correctly but are pushing or pulling the putt to avoid missing it low, which can run away from the hole to an uncomfortable distance
This is a problem that has surfaced in my own game recently and here's what I'm going to do to cure it and hole more breaking putts.
  • I'm going to get outdoors for whatever days are left and actually practice missing breaking putts on the low side. This is an overcorrection technique that I use with students for swing flaw correction, and I'm going to use the same principle for putting.

  • This winter I'm going to use an elevated aimline to make sure that I start my putt directly on my aimline on a practice green setup with a little break. The aimline will be aimed at my aimpoint so that I can monitor if I'm pushing or pulling at the strike.

If you have this problem, try these solutions and your putting should improve.
