Tom's Featured Tip: The Impact Fix Position and Drills

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

If anyone asked me to sum up how I teach golf, I would probably say that I'm an "impact teacher" first and foremost.

Now, by saying that I don't necessarily mean that I want my teaching to impact the student's game positively, even though I do want that result.

What I mean by describing myself as an "impact teacher" first and foremost, is that my goal is to teach the student what the impact position is and how to get to it during their swing.

Here's a description of that position and a link to a visual for reference, as well as a couple of great impact drills.

First of all, I have my students practice simply getting to a static impact fix position.

I position the student as follows:
  • Weight feathered onto the forward side, about 55% to 45% for the drill, with a pitching wedge in hand
  • Forward shaft lean
  • Hands forward and slightly elevated with a slight outward angle to simulate a strike resulting from an inside attack angle
  • Shoulders relatively square
  • Hips open
Here are two great drills that I use at lessons to help the student get a feel for impact:
  1. Drill One:
    • Set up normally, then position yourself in the impact fix position and hold for four seconds.
    • Then execute a full swing starting from the impact fix position.
  2. Drill Two:
    • Set up normally, then position yourself in the impact fix position and hold for four seconds.
    • Then set up normally for your shot and execute a full swing.
Either drill will help you groove a good impact position during your actual swing, and I recommend actually playing all of your short iron shots by starting from the impact fix position. It's worked wonders for me.

Health, Wellness, Fitness: Quality Weight Training

Disclaimer: DO NOT PERFORM ANY STRENUOUS PHYSICAL EXERCISE LIKE THE ONE LISTED BELOW, WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR DOCTOR.

Less Is Usually Better

In this day and age, almost all of the research done on exercise for non-professional athletes - bodyweight exercises as well as weight training - points to less reps but higher intensity, with progression being a very important consideration.
  • Quality trumps quantity

  • Fewer reps is usually better than higher reps, especially for strength building.

  • Fewer sets, as in one or two sets max. I recommend one warmup at half of your working weight, then one working set for ten reps max, then you add weight (PROGRESSION)

  • Fewer workouts (one or two per week, rather than three).

  • Heavier weight or resistance, progressing in small increments after 10 reps are attained in the working set.

  • Perfect form. Cheating on form is only fooling yourself, it's like cheating at golf. Don't do it.

  • More rest and recuperation.

  • Adequate protein intake.

  • Judicious use of all-natural supplements.

Do you lack energy, sleep poorly, or feel generally lousy a lot of the time?

If that describes you, maybe it's time to try the Isotonix Daily Essentials Kit supplements that I use daily.

If you haven't tried them yet, why not?

Note that they are called Daily Essentials, not Daily Optionals!
Simply said - if our body doesn't make it, we need to take it. They have made a profound difference in my health. I used to take high blood pressure and cholesterol medication, and I now have normal blood pressure and normal cholesterol levels. In fact, all of my blood work is perfect.

The only change I made to get off these medications was taking my Daily Essentials, and that's not even why I started taking it, it was a side benefit. I started taking it to increase my energy, and it did.

Why the heck not give it a try?

Tom's Bonus Tip: Do Putters Have ESP?

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do!

This happens to me all the time when I am about to experiment with a new - or old - putter, I swear that putters have ESP.

Last issue I addressed a question about face-on putting, and mentioned that I was considering experimenting with that style again next year with one of my face-on putters.

I own a lot of putters. If a non-golfer saw my collection that would think I had a putter fetish. Golfers, of course, understand that you can never really have enough putters. :-)

Anyway, after I had forwarded the newsletter to my mailserver/broadcaster, a buddy called me and said he had two passes for the Holiday Valley GC, and did I want to join him. It worked out perfectly with my schedule, and off we went on probably the last perfect day for golf of the year, sunny and 72 degrees!

Here's where my Odyssey two ball putter ESP comes in.

I one-putted the first seven holes and carded a 31, my lowest nine hole score ever. Alas, I'm sorry to say that I didn't take advantage to shoot my age (68) because I shot a 39 on the back. Drat!!!!!

I'm sure that my trusty two ball putter found out about the article and did it's best to convince me to keep it in my bag exclusively, but I'm going to try the face-on putting style again anyway.

However, in a slight concession to my two ball putter, I bought a 48" shafted Odyssey two ball putter yesterday off EBay to try the face-on style with that putter.

It was cheap enough, but deep in my soul I really wish I could stop buying putters! :-)
