Tom's Featured Tip: Swing Evaluation Session For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do! This is something you should seriously consider if you plan on working on your swing over the winter! I am now offering Individual Swing Evaluations indoors at the Plum Creek Range where I conduct my lessons. The session includes four graded swings with short irons, middle irons, hybrid, wood, and driver. Each swing is graded, and notes and recommendations are entered on a hard copy form during the lesson. The form is then scanned into a .pdf document and emailed to the student as an attachment after the lesson for future reference. After the swing evaluation form is completed, the student and I review the data and discuss corrective action for any flaws identified during the evaluation. We use the indoor simulator during the session, which defines and illustrates the parameters of the swing result. Most importantly, it shows the starting direction for the shot and curvature, which are the primary considerations for most students. For some advanced students that have consistent direction and curvature to begin with, we pay closer attention to their smash factor. Smash factor is the ratio of ball speed to clubhead speed, expressed as a number calculated by the simulator. Smash factor is generally considered to be a measure of the quality of ball striking. However, it can be just a little deceptive when you consider that it's affected by loft, which presents the clubface with a degree of obliqueness to the ball at the strike, even if the swingpath and sweet spot contact are perfect. I am booking indoor Swing Evaluation sessions now, the cost is $50, and they are by appointment only. My availability for all indoor instruction is as follows:

Vitamin D - Winter Supplementation I was reminded of Vitamin D supplementation during a recent physical. I was reviewing a graph of my history of my vitamin D levels, and it showed that it was time to start my winter supplementation again. My blood work showed that I get enough during the summer months, when I'm outdoors every day giving lessons, but that it drops off pretty dramatically in the winter. As a result, I'll start adding this supplement (actually I started last weekend) Isotonix Vitamin D with K2 like I do every year from November through the end of May. If you suffer from low Vitamin D during the winter, give this a try. It's extremely high quality, and the delivery method Isotonic - Delivery is absolutely superior to the more common delivery methods of pills or capsules. When you order, make sure to enter 10OFFMA in the discount code box when you check out in order to get the 10% discount that I offer to family, friends, and newsletter subscribers. Do you lack energy, sleep poorly, or feel generally lousy a lot of the time? If that describes you, maybe it's time to try the Isotonix Daily Essentials Kit supplements that I use daily. If you haven't tried them yet, why not? Note that they are called Daily Essentials, not Daily Optionals! Simply said - if our body doesn't make it, we need to take it. They have made a profound difference in my health. I used to take high blood pressure and cholesterol medication, and I now have normal blood pressure and normal cholesterol levels. In fact, all of my blood work is perfect. The only change I made to get off these medications was taking my Daily Essentials, and that's not even why I started taking it, it was a side benefit. I started taking it to increase my energy, and it did. Why the heck not give it a try? Every experienced instructor, clubfitter, and golf researcher knows that launch monitors give bad readings from time to time (probably in the vicinity of 5-10% of the time), and you have to recognize and discard those readings. I don't care if it's a Trackman, Flightscope, or the one I use at Plum Creek - an AboutGolf PGA Tour Indoor Simulator like the one they use on the Golf Channel. I recall hitting seven irons shots into the simulator between lessons, and one read out at 183 yards. My normal range for a seven iron is between 148 and 155 yards. It actually happened twice as I hit a bunch of balls, so I absolutely buy into the 5-10% margin of error theory. Simulators are great practice, instructional, and clubfitting tools, but just be aware that every now and then you can expect a strange reading.
