Tom's Featured Tip: Golf Minutia

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

This weeks main tip is going to be a little different than usual in that it involves more minutia and less tip.

Chris Carroll, a player that I coach that is playing about ten professional tournaments this year, had a last second chance to get into an event in North Carolina last Sunday. Since he was going to be in the area on Saturday for a friends' wedding, he decided to give it a shot. We talked about it, and decided it would be a great way to see where his tournament golf swing stands at the beginning of the year.

He has been hitting it great at the dome, so this would be an early pressure test.

It was a one day tournament at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh NC, and Chris shot 65 (- 5) to win by two strokes!

Pretty sweet to start off the year with a trophy and a check! Congrats to Chris.

I'm also coming to the conclusion that kids are a good thing.

My daughter is a physical therapist assistant at the Buffalo VA, and she's tended to me many times for various injuries that I've incurred either from golf or training.

My sons are golf oriented, each having been a PGA Club Pro at one time in their lives.

My youngest son hooked us up with great tickets for the PGA at Oak Hill in 2013, and my oldest son called me last Sunday to ask me if I'd be interested in going to the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando this coming weekend. He also mentioned that we would have access to his boss's V.I.P. box overlooking the 18th green, and that he was able to hook us up with round of golf at the Isleworth Golf Club where Tiger used to play and practice before he moved to Jupiter.

Of course I'm taking him up on the offer, and if I'm lucky enough to get a photo with Arnie I'll post it on my site.

Bottom line is I guess I should have had more kids :-)

These next two items are a little more "golf tip" related.

It's now time to start stretching daily to get your body ready for your golf swing, and it's also time to see where your swing stands for the season. Get to a dome and take some swings to see how the ball's flying.

OR EVEN BETTER, contact me to make an appointment for a Swing Evaluation Session indoors at Plum Creek to get yourself on track.

If you want to get in my book for a lesson or a swing evaluation, please contact me ASAP because my simulator time is at a premium. Email me at ttucker@rochester.rr.com or give me a call at (716) 474-3005.

If you are interested in having your own outdoor practice area installed this year - see the Tour Greens section below - and feel free to give me a no obligation call for details. We are setting up our outdoor installation schedule now, so if you have interest we should talk soon.

Health, Wellness, Fitness: What Counts As Cardio These Days?

Disclaimer: DO NOT PERFORM ANY STRENUOUS PHYSICAL EXERCISE LIKE THE ONE LISTED BELOW, WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR DOCTOR.

Recommendations for the best way to do cardio have changed over the years - from long slow cardio to faster paced more intensive training.

Here's what is widely considered to be the best way to get your cardio exercise now:

For Your Health
  • 5 x 30 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, like walking at 3 to 4.5 miles per hour, OR
  • 3 x 25 minutes of vigorous exercise weekly, like HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts, jogging or running at 5 mph or faster, cycling at more than 10 mph
For Weight Loss
  • A minimum of 5 x 30 to 50 minutes of moderate exercise weekly. Aim to burn 300 calories a session (an hour-long power walk at 4 mph or 35 minutes of HICT (High Intensity Circuit Training).

Nutrition:  Get Your Daily Essentials

Do you lack energy, sleep poorly, or feel generally lousy a lot of the time?

If that describes you, maybe it's time to try the Isotonix Daily Essentials Kit supplements that I personally use daily.

If you haven't tried them yet, why the heck not?

Isotonix Daily Essentials Kit Customer Reviews

Note that they are called Daily Essentials - not Daily Optionals - for a reason! Simply said - if our body doesn't make it, we need to take it. These all-natural supplements have made a profound difference in my health. I used to take high blood pressure and cholesterol medication, and I now have normal blood pressure and normal cholesterol levels and take none of those medications anymore.

In fact, all of my blood work is perfect.

The only change I made to get off these medications was taking my Daily Essentials, and that's not even why I started taking them, it was a side benefit. I started taking it to increase my energy, and it did that too!

Why the heck not give it a try?  Buy Now

Tom's Bonus Tip: I'm Going To Try This

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

If you've been subscribed to this newsletter for awhile, you know I'm a fan of the face - on putting method.

I haven't put that method in play with my serious golf yet, because my trusty two ball putter keeps defeating the face - on putter when I test them against each other. Having said that, I still contend that the face - on method is the most comfortable method in existence - from a posture perspective as well as a visual perspective.

Face - on putting is when you face the hole and putt with your body positioned off to the side of the ball. The method usually - but not always - employs a long putter held off to the side of the body.

While watching the Valspar Championship at the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida last weekend I saw Jordan Speith doing something interesting on many - but interestingly not all - of his short putts.

He was actually looking at the hole (like you would with a face - on putt) as he stroked his short putts, and he didn't miss one while I was watching.

He would set up, then glance at the ball, the hole, the ball, the hole, the ball, then he'd hold the next glance at the hole and stroke the putt. It obviously worked pretty well because he ended up winning the tournament in a playoff.

If you tend to want to peek at the hole on short putts, don't be afraid to try this method and see how it works. When you are already looking at the hole, you won't pick up at impact and jerk the ball left or make a weak swipe at the ball.

I'm already a great putter (at least that's what I keep telling myself), but I'm going to try this anyway because it seems like such a natural fit for the eyes.
