Tom's Featured Tip: The Natural Release

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

A lesson I gave recently motivated me to write about this topic.

The student was in his fifties, very fit, and loves the game of golf.

He has shot a low round of 70 in his life, but over the past several years his game has deteriorated to shooting in the eighties.

I know many of you reading this would like to have the "problem" of shooting in the eighties, but his problem is real.

Here's some of what I told him "I give lessons to many students that were once low single digit handicap players but have seen their handicap rise to double digits.

Almost to a man (or woman), this rise in handicap is accompanied by - or perhaps even caused by - overactive hands. It seems as a persons game starts to deteriorate, they try to make up for it by opening the face on the backswing, then forcing too much rotation to close the clubface at the point of impact.

What actually should happen is the opposite.

Let the clubface open and release naturally as you hold the face square to your swing circle. Resist forcing any rotation at all.

The Natural Release

As you turn into your takeaway and backswing, you should concentrate on keeping your clubhead square to your swing circle, not fanning the clubface open.

When your right elbow starts to bend as a natural progression of the backswing, the clubface will look and feel like it's opening.

Then initiate your downswing sequence correctly with a lateral weight bump/shift and simultaneously point your right elbow towards the ground and move it towards your right side.

This puts the club on plane, and it should look like the face is still open.

As you approach impact with your downswing and extend your right arm, it will look like the clubface is closing because it is getting back to square to your swing circle.

This is your natural release. No rolling of the hands or forearms, just trying to keep things squared up to your swing circle.

Into your follow through the clubface should remain square to your swing circle until your left elbow bends, at which time it will look like the clubface is rotating closed. This happens from the momentum of the elbow action just like it does in the backswing, not from consciously rolling hands or forearms to close the face.

It can produce draws or fades depending on ball position and body alignment.

It's fairly simple to execute after you've practiced it. Why complicate a simple action with overactive hands?

Here's a drill you can do to build this skill. Do it with or without a club, no ball. in very slow motion:
  1. Swing back halfway inside and up - watch the clubhead to make sure it's not closing or opening in relation to your swing circle.
  2. Pressure down on your left foot as you swing back, do not shift your hips laterally.
  3. Transition - bump your weight laterally forward (towards the target) and simultaneously drop your right elbow towards your right rib cage.
  4. Extend your right arm as the club gets to the impact position and hold.
  5. Slow motion to half follow through and hold.
  6. Observe your weight and hands. Your weight should be 95% on your forward leg, and your hands should still be ahead of the clubhead.
Try this if you have been playing with overactive hands, and watch your accuracy improve.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Risk

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I saw this quote from author and publisher Bob Kennedy and had to pass it along:

"Without risks, there are no rewards. Without passion, there are no results"

I think this could be applied judiciously to golf, with emphasis on the word judiciously.
