Tom's Featured Tip: YAC - Get Some!

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

If you carry the ball 260 yards, you don't necessarily need YAC, but it could be beneficial under some course conditions.

If you have a more normal swing speed range, or if you are a senior player or a female player, you could probably use some YAC.

So what the heck is YAC?

It came to me because in football YAC acronym means Yards After the Catch.

My golf YAC acronym means Yards After Carry with your drive.

Especially in the dry conditions we play in late summer, YAC can get you much closer to the hole off the tee. Much closer to the hole should mean more pars or birdies.

In order to get YAC you need a medium trajectory launch with your driver that produces a draw, which is a shot that curves gently from right to left.

There is more than one way to produce a draw, but for most of my students I prefer a technique that does not employ excessive hand movement.

The caveat is that you own your swing circle. That means that you swing along your body lines the same way for each club in your bag. The angle of your circle will change with each club, because each club has a different lie angle. Your wedge swings will be more vertical than your driver swing. The swing circle, however, remains consistent as far as your swing fundamentals and swinging along your body lines.

Here's a simple way to hit a gentle draw.
  • First set up square to your target

  • Now make the following adjustments:
    • Close your stance about an inch, but
    • Leave the clubface pointing at the target as it was when you set up initially.

  • Make your normal, consistent swing and you should hit a gentle draw.

  • You may need to experiment a bit with ball position to get it perfect, so pay particular attention to that aspect as you practice this method.
The reason this works is that curvature is created from the difference in the angle of the clubface in relation to the swingpath at impact. By closing your stance but leaving the clubface pointed at the target, you have essentially closed the face in relation to your repeating swing circle swing path. You just need to make sure that you swing along your body lines, the same as if you had set up square to your target. Be aware that a closed stance often entices the player to swing slightly outside to inside on the downswing. Don't do it, stay true to your swing circle and the inside attack downswing path it produces.

If you normally hit fades or slices, this will be a game changer. Try it, you'll love the YAC.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Don't Believe Everything You Hear on TV

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I was coin flipping over calling this short comment "Don't believe everything you hear" or "What the heck did that mean?".

While watching the totally captivating PGA Tournament last Sunday, I saw Brandon Grace make a stroke at a straight 15 foot or so putt that missed pretty badly to the left, but rolled about 10 inches past the hole. That's perfect speed to me..

Then one of the regular commentators, who makes so many mistakes in his opinions on technique that I lose count, said " He had the blade closed at impact, he needs a little better acceleration."

Whaaat?

A little better acceleration would simply mean that he would have missed that straight putt left, but that it would have rolled further away from the hole. The slow motion replay looked like a square strike, which means to me that it was simply a bad read or bad alignment.

I cringe when I think about those fans watching TV that have a consistent left miss with their putts that now think more acceleration will solve the problem.

If you are missing straight putts to the left consistently, it's not because of poor acceleration. Either the face is closed to your swingpath, or it's square to an outside to inside swingpath, or you could be moving your head.

Most of it is pure physics, don't overthink it.

Most of the time when you watch TV and listen to the commentary, it's more reliable to believe what you see, not necessarily what you hear.
