Tom's Featured Tip: Goals

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Goal setting is perhaps one of the most least considered aspects of golf for the average player.

When I say goals, I mean the written down kind, not the "in your mind kind". If it's not written down it's a desire or a dream, which I consider to be much different than a goal.

I was travelling for the last few days when I received a call from Chris Carroll, the pro at Rothland who I coach.

He called me for two reasons - one to ask me if I had received my email newsletter from the U.S.G.T.F., the professional organization we both belong to. I hadn't read it yet, but it mentioned him because he won the Northeast Regional Tournament - so congrats are in order for that.

But the main reason he called me was that he read where Dicky Pride predicted his Web.com Tour win with a motivational message he kept in his wallet.

It was written by hand on a piece of paper and it said: "I will win on the web.com tour in 2015, and be exempt for the PGA Tour in 2016". He also posted this after the tournament win: "This has been in my wallet for 6 months I look at it every day. Dream it Believe it write it down and watch it happen".

The reason Chris called me about this is that at the beginning of 2015, I had him write down his goal of playing on tour in his pocket - I'm not mentioning the exact words here, that's personal. I'm glad Dicky Pride reinforced my advice.

Personally, I've been carrying a note with the number "68" on it in my money clip so that I see it every time I take out any cash. That's my age, and I want to shoot it this year. The bad news is that it hasn't happened yet (I was close twice) the good news is that I will be changing the note to read "69" in about a month :-)

The value of the written goal is that every time you see it, it reinforces your determination to accomplish your goal. It will keep you on track when you are tempted to wander.

Does it always work? No, but it will provide motivation when you are tempted to be lazy (like skipping a scheduled practice or workout), or when you are losing your focus.

So if you have a specific - and it needs to be specific - golf goal, take a minute to write it down on an index card, put it in your pocket, and look at it daily. If it is a long range goal or one with the purpose of breaking a bad habit, have it laminated so that it will last.

Writing it down and seeing it daily is a powerful motivator.

Just ask Dicky Pride.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Little Things Can Make A Big Difference - Wrists

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Here's an addition to last issue's tip about a flatter swing plane vs. a vertical swing plane (merry go round vs. ferris wheel).

After you arrive at a good swing plane for your driver, add the thought of "oily wrists" to your brain and your swing transformation should be complete.

That thought really helps your clubface square up at the correct time.

Try it, you'll like it.
