Tom's Featured Tip: Walking It Across The Road

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

"Walking it across the road" is a common phrase that describes taking your good swings from the range to the course successfully .

A lot of golfers have trouble making this walk. They swing well on the range, then can't make the transition from the range to actual play.

Here are a couple of thoughts on how you can make the "walk across the road" successfully. Please note that, these recommendations aren't made at the exclusion of your normal stretching and warmup routine, do that as usual before you start full swings.
  • Put aside enough balls to finish your session by "playing" the first four holes where you usually play, but playing them on the range. Full or partial swings only, no putts. I chose four holes because it's been my experience that when I play without hitting balls before a round, it takes me four holes to feel my swing.

For example, I play a lot at Batavia CC, my favorite course. The first four holes are a 533 yd. par 5, a 472 yd. par 5 with water in front of the green, a 153 yard par 3, and a 386 yd. par 4. So I put aside 12 balls. I'll only need 9 balls if I hit each shot solid, but I keep three balls in reserve for less than perfect strikes. If I happen to hit all 9 shots well, I usually hit the 3 leftover balls with a swing that produces an 80 yard punch shot with my pitching wedge.

  • This next step is very important. Go through your entire pre-shot routine for every shot. Be precise, don't skip anything. Go through your routine, make your swing, and visualize the result. Then select the club for the next shot, go through your entire pre-shot routine and make your swing.

If you mis-hit a shot, or if it goes right or left where there would be trouble if you were actually playing the hole, your next shot might require a pitch out or a punch shot. That's the shot you take.

After you visualize hitting the green, move on to the next hole.
If you do this, especially on a day when you are going to play, you will be more prepared mentally and physically than if you don't do it. That should translate to better scoring, especially for the first four holes, which is where many players lose strokes because they haven't prepared properly.

In fact, if you are going to play right after your range session, I would go so far as to say that if your swing feels comfortable, hit only a minimal number of balls before you end with this routine.

Utilizing your range time this way, especially before you play, prepares your brain as well as your body.

And don't forget to take a few putts on the practice green before you tee it up.

Do all of this and you'll be properly prepared to play. Try it, you'll like it.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Simple Aiming Point Putting Drill

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

This putting drill is simple, quick, easy, and doesn't require any expensive training aids.

The purpose of the drill is to see if you are putting the ball on your intended aimline.

Put a dime down on a putting green, and arrange six balls in a semi-circle about 18 inches from the dime.

Next, simply move from ball to ball and stroke putts that cross over the dime.

Putt at varied speeds to make sure that your firm strokes as well as your softer strokes are on-line. If your are missing the dime, change some aspect of your alignment or ball position until you can make the ball cross the dime consistently. Then take that setup to the course when you play.

When you play, imagine the dime about 18 inches down your aimline for your putt, think about speed, stroke your putt and watch more putts drop.

Pretty soon you'll be holing putts like they're a dime a dozen - try it, you'll like it.
