Tom's Featured Tip: Cold Weather Driver Tip

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

It's that time of the year again, cold weather golf time.

We get it twice per year, in the spring and in the fall.

Last Saturday we teed it up at 7:15 am and the wind chill was 38 degrees. I was bundled up with several layers to stay warm, but the problem was the loss of swing speed that comes along with layering your body. Combined with the cold temperature, it results in a loss of elevation as well as a shorter carry distance for your driver swings, and a loss of rollout due to soggy ground.

With your iron swings you solve the problem by simply taking more club, but what do you do with your driver?

The answer for players who generate dynamic speed and great rotation regardless of the weather is to just allow for less distance on their drives.

For other players and for senior golfers, there is another option.

Get a new driver by simply changing out the shaft on your adjustable driver to a shaft with a softer flex.

When I was playing really competitive golf about 20 years ago, I always had two drivers that were identical except for shaft flex. I would use the "R" flex driver for when the temperature was below 45 degrees, or when I was wearing layers due to cold feeling conditions, and I would use a "S" flex driver for warmer conditions.

Having two drivers was a little pricey, but nowadays with adjustable shafts all you need is two shafts for the same driver head, and you can find deals for that option.

I just ordered an "R" flex driver shaft for my Ping G30 driver because it will compensate for a less dynamic swing when I'm layered up for the cold. Here's what it will give me (with good swing technique) in cold weather play:
  • It will give my ball a little more elevation

  • It will impart a little higher spin rate, which will give me more right to left overspin when I hit a draw, which will give me a little more rollout after it hits the ground. And you know I love that "YAC".
The caveat for making the switch is that you need to maintain good swing tempo, especially if you are a "hitter" vs. a "swinger". Either swing method is perfectly valid, but a "hitter" swing method doesn't work well with a softer than normal shaft, even in cold weather.

If you overswing with a shaft that flexes more than your normal shaft, the face could either be open at impact resulting in a push, or the face could close too rapidly, turning a nice draw into an ugly hook.

The stiffer the shaft, the tighter the torque, less stiff means softer torque. Torque is the factor that determines how fast or slow the face closes through impact.

If you do not generate a ton of swing speed, try a shaft one flex softer than your warm weather shaft when the weather gets cold and I think you'll really like the results.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Cold Weather Putting Tip

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

This tip is not an equipment tip, it's a technique tip.

I've always been a proponent of a shoulder powered pendulum stroke for putting, and here's a side benefit of that method.

When you are playing in weather cold enough to be wearing two gloves, you won't suffer any loss of consistency by putting with both gloves on. The shoulder powered stroke is one that actually works best with virtually no hand movement, so it's a perfect technique for cold weather.

I teach a shoulder powered pendulum stroke with a straight back - straight through swing path because I feel that it's by far the best technique around for overall putting excellence. So if your putting is sub par and you are looking for a reason to change your putting technique, add cold weather putting to the list.
