Tom's Featured Tip: Cold Weather and Distance

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Playing golf in the Northeast at this time of year can be quite challenging due to the cold. It can be discouraging unless you realize a few facts about how the cold weather effects the ball and ball flight.

Here are a few facts that you need to be aware of to get the most enjoyment out of your game in cold weather.
  • Air temperature causes more loss of distance than the temperature of the ball itself, but balls left in cold places lose some resiliency, which affects the spin rate of the ball.

  • High compression balls will not go as far as low compression balls when the temperature drops below 50 degrees. And if you store them in a cold climate, like your trunk or garage, they'll harden somewhat which will effect their performance (less resilience).

  • The optimum temperature for a golf ball is 80 degrees. As a ball's temperature drops, it won't compress as much off the clubface. For maximum playability, store golf balls at room temperature.

  • Temperature effect summary:
    • optimum temperature for a golf ball is 80 degrees
    • For every 10 degrees colder, figure about 2.5 yards of lost distance
    • 70 Degrees - stay with the normal club for any distance
    • 60 Degrees - add a half club
    • 50 Degrees - add a full club
    • 40 Degrees - add 2 full clubs just to be safe, because when it's that cold you will be bundled up for warmth
    • 30 Degrees - find a shrink, you're too obsessed with the game :-)
I hope this helps all of you cold weather players!

Tom's Bonus Tip: Aim Deliberately

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

This is an extremely simple tip that will yield profound results.

Aim deliberately, not casually.

I not only see this all the time, but I am guilty of it on occasion.

Casual aiming can come into play when you are playing the course that you play most often. It doesn't happen as much on courses that you play infrequently because your brain is unfamiliar with the surroundings and you feel that you need to pay attention.

When you aim casually this happens: you set up to the ball, make a great swing with great contact, then observe a result that's ten or twenty yards off to the left or the right of your target. All because you aimed at nothing in particular.

Don't let laxity creep into that part of your game. Aim and align more deliberately and you'll be holing more putts. Your ball will end up closer to the hole on your approach shots, and the habit of deliberate aiming will also carry over to your putting .... and that's a very good thing.

Try it, you'll like it.
