Tom's Featured Tip: Back Pain

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

This season - 2015 - I dealt with a bulging disc in my back and some mildly herniated discs in my neck.

The neck never really caused me any swing issues, but the bulging disc in the thoracic area of my spine affected my game severely and took me completely out of action for a couple of weeks.

I went to see a neurosurgeon who said that he didn't think surgery would be appropriate, and that basically I had to live with it because the golf swing is "hard on the back". I should have checked to see if he was a golfer before I made the appointment, but at least I had peace of mind that surgery wasn't necessary.

My daughter Colleen is a Physical Therapist Assistant at the V.A. Hospital in Buffalo, and I mentioned the problem to her. I caught her just as she had completed some McKenzie Method training on back issues, and she showed me an exercise that I've been doing ever since that has helped me immensely.

Just to cover my butt I'm stating that you shouldn't try this exercise without your doctor's consent if you have back pain.

Here's the exercise I do faithfully every day that has all but cured my problem:
  • Lie flat on the ground and place your hands as if you are preparing to do a pushup
  • Then push with your arms like you would for a pushup, but leave your pelvis on the ground
Apparently it helps the disc to re-seat itself properly in the canal.

I do it for five consecutive minutes every morning, after I play golf, and after any exercise session.

I believe that it has realigned my disc to the point to where I should be able to progress to more thoracic spine stretching exercises.

This is the next exercise I am adding. I'm working into it gently and will continue to do if my back allows:

Side Lying Thoracic Rotation

Give these exercises a try in the same sequence as recommended if you are experiencing thoracic back pain, and I think you'll find some relief.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Squaring The Putterface

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I spent the Thanksgiving holidays in Florida at my son Tom's home. While there I had the chance to play several rounds with him, my grandson Cameron, and my brother Jim.

Tom was a Club Pro at one time in his life, and he's a high level player.

During our first round, he was leaving his putts to the right because his face wasn't squaring up, and he did something interesting the second time we played.

His putter of choice is a small mallet head Scotty Cameron putter, but for that round he switched to a toe drop blade putter to help him feel the putterface squaring up. His stroke is a mildly arcing to square stroke, and the switch did the trick. He switched back to his Scotty Cameron putter for subsequent rounds, and he was squaring the putterface fine after that.

Here's the lesson:
  • If you are leaving putts to the right, it's because your putterface is pointing there.

  • If your stroke is straight back - straight through, get a couple of 2x4's, set them up on edge parallel to each other lengthwise and leave room to swing a putter in the channel. Execute swings to groove a swingpath that stays on the correct line.

  • If your stroke is arcing to square, make sure that your putterface is squaring up at impact. Try placing a 2x4 flat on the ground pointing right down your intended aimline. Then gently execute putting strokes striking the rear of the board, making sure that your putterface is perfectly square to the board at impact.
Try these simple cures and you'll get your putterface squared up at impact again.
