For any missed shot in golf, it's important to note if there is a pattern to your misses. For breaking putts most players usually have a consistent pattern of either missing the putt on the high side - sometimes called the pro side, or the low side - sometimes called the amateur side. Pro or high side misses means that the putt at least had a chance to drop, whereas amateur or low side misses have zero chances of going in. Obviously, high side misses are more desirable than low side misses, but the fact remains that they are both MISSES. The causes for the miss can be either inconsistent speed on your putts, inconsistent swing path, incorrect body alignment, poor putterface alignment, or picking the wrong starting line. Overcorrection drills can help you break bad swing habits, and they can be used for putting also. Here's a very effective overcorrection drill to practice for breaking putts this winter where you already know the line of the putt. If you know the line of the putt and are able to roll the ball on a 16" straight starting line, the speed of the putt is everything.
Try this drill, you'll love it! Here's how to practice to develop that skill. Set up 16" from a target that defines a space narrower than a golf hole but wider than a golf ball and practice stroking putts through that defined space. You could use tees, 2"x 4"s, or anything that defines the space and gives feedback if you miss. Here's a video of how it's done using an Aimlime Accuracy Board.
