Junior Golf Camp
Junior Golf Camp at BCC

This year I'll be conducting several weeks of Junior Golf Camp for boys and girls at the Batavia Country Club. I will be assisted by Roxanne Noeth, who has won the BCC Ladies Club Championship several times.

At the camp, junior golfers will learn the basic skills of golf, as well as golf etiquette and self discipline. There will be daily games and prizes, and all the kids have had a blast at past camps. Availability is limited to 20 kids per week, it's on a first come first served basis.

This years camp will run for five days, Monday through Friday.

Junior Golf Camp hours are as follows:
Monday - Thursday 8:30am - 11 am. Monday through Thursday will include instruction, play, and contests.
Friday - Tournament starts at 6:45 am sharp and usually takes about an hour and a half. Each player needs a caddy age 16 or over, and a brief awards presentation follows the tournament.

There will be a ten minute break half way through each session, players should bring their own beverages and snacks.

Dates and Age Groupings are as follows:

July 10 - 14 - Ages 7 - 9
July 17 - 21 - Ages 10 - 15
July 24 - 28 - Ages 10 - 15

The cost for an individual junior golfer is $99 for the week. If two siblings attend during the same week, the cost drops to $89 per junior golfer.

Players will need to bring their own equipment.

For more information or to register, please contact the Batavia Country Club (585) 343-7600 ext 10. Payment is required to reserve your spot.

Tom's Featured Tip:
Downswsing Swing Keys

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I always try to keep things as simple as possible with my students, and one of the challenges is expressing the downswing sequence.

Here's what needs to be done - in sequence - to get the downswing started correctly:
  • shift (bump) hips laterally
  • rotate hips
  • rotate shoulders
  • swing arms
As you become proficient at this, the lateral shift of the hips and the rotation blend seamlessly, however the lateral shift motion must precede the hip rotation even if it's for a microsecond. Otherwise, you run the risk of casting the club outward and creating an outside to inside swing path on your downswing.

Practicing the shift then rotate portion in slow motion is an excellent way to learn the sequence properly.

Also note that your shoulder turn should slow just prior to impact to allow the arms and hands to square the clubhead up naturally through impact without any unnecessary hand, wrist, or forearm manipulation.

Think shift, rotate, and swing and your downswing will become more consistent.

Tom's Bonus Tip: Ben Hogan Ball - Stance Positions

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I found this drawing of Ben Hogan's ball - stance positions for various clubs.

I think it interesting for a couple of reasons.

He set up with his front foot open to his aimline, but with the back foot square to it. I think that for most recreational golfers, there's an advantage from also opening your rear foot to gain a little more turn on the backswing. Ben turned his shoulders against his hips to get more coil. I don't teach that any more because of the stress it causes on the back. I teach my students to take advantage of centrifugal force to generate swing speed instead.

The other interesting thing is that he bothered to make this drawing at all. In my opinion, it speaks volumes to his greatness that he paid that much attention to detail. It's inspired me to make up my own personal ball - stance position drawing, and I sincerely hope that his drawing has had the same effect on you.

Enjoy.
