Tom's Featured Tip:
Putting - How To Use The Line On The Ball

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Last week I mentioned this in the putting factiods tip:

I use a line on the ball, but I don't use it to define the direction of my stroke. I aim it at my aimline from behind the ball, using my dominant eye only. Then I use it to make sure that my putterface is square to my intended aimline. I try to get my head right over the ball at address and see that the middle of my putterface is set up to the middle of the ball, and that the face of my putter is square to the line on the ball.

I actually switched to a putter with no aimlines so that they would not be a distraction, the TaylorMade Spider Tour Black. I still switch around from putter to putter on occasion, but when I do I only use the aimlines on the putter to help me make sure the ball is in the center of the face, after the face is positioned square to my intended aimline.

I bring it up again because I'm having fantastic success with this and the putter that I am currently using, and when I have success with something I like to share the wealth.

Here are some illustrations of how to use a line on the ball in a little more detail:
  • aim the line on the ball at your aimline using your dominant eye only. Here's how the nuns used to use their dominant eye on me in grammar school prior to whacking me with the ruler (I always deserved it):

  • double check the line from behind the ball, using the face of the putter as a straight line:

  • when you set up, lean forward so that your eyes are directly over the ball, and set your putterface square to your aimline:

  • then lean back into your normal position and forget about the line, just concentrate on distance and speed control

Notice how the perspective on the line on the ball has changed as you leanded back in to your normal setup position.
I'm adding this to my putting lesson outline, and I'll pretty much guarantee that if you start using this method you'll make more putts.

Try it, you'll definitely like it.

Enjoy, Tom

Tom's Bonus Tip: "But I Hit It Anyway"

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

We all have had that situation where we've bit a bad shot because either:
  1. You weren't sure that you had the right club in your hand
  2. You allowed something to distract you just before starting your backswing
  3. You weren't committred to the type of shot you wanted to play
  4. You had an unfocused frame of mind for the shot
The you went ahead and hit a poor shot and told your playing partners either 1,2,3,4 or another excuse then said "but I hit it anyway".

You have the power to control these situations.

Take the "but I hit it anyway" situations out of your game by having a totally committed mind set before you swing the club and you won't need to say that anymore.

Blow all the other distractions and negative thoughts out of your head by saying this to yourself: this is definitely the club, now just put a good swing on the ball.

That's absolutely all it takes for a good mindset pre-swing. Try it you'll like it for sure
