Tom's Featured Tip: Putting Training Aid For Under $5
For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.
The importance of executing a "square strike" on your ball with your putter can not be overstated.
I define a "square strike" as making contact with the ball with your putter face square to your target line and also square to your putter swing path at the time of contact. Striking the ball with these two elements in place will give you pure impact and a rollout that will be consistent with the power component of your swing.
Having a training aid that will give you feedback for a ball that rolls straight down your target line is essential to building a good putting stroke.
I've built my own training aid to help practice the "square strike" component, but before that I bought a "Putting Sword" for $29.95 plus tax and shipping:
When you strike your putt squarely it rolls the length of the sword, if you strike it non-squarely it rolls off the side before it reaches the end of the sword. It's an invaluable tool for developing a square strike and thus making a lot more putts.
I was in my basement yesterday measuring a board with an aluminum yardstick when I discovered that I had another putting sword in my hand for less than $5.
Simply place the yardstick on the floor, put the ball in the hole that's pre-drilled in the yardstick for hanging it from a nail, and roll putt down the length of the yardstick. Keep practicing until you can roll it the length of the yardstick consistently and your putting absolutely, positively will improve. You will still need to figure out your aimline and pace for putts, but the first step is executing a "square strike" and putting a consistent roll on the ball.
