Tom's Featured Tip: Make Your Chipping Great Again

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I've been following Tiger's comeback closely, and here are my observations so far:
  • His first tournament this year, he had to feel the overall pressure of playing on the weekend after making the cut.
    He addressed that.

  • His second tournament, when he was in contention briefly, he had to feel the pressure of putting in the final round.
    He addressed that.

  • In last week's tournament, he had to feel the pain of making a mental mistake on poor choice on a tee shot on a short par five when he actually had a shot at winning.
My guess is that he'll address that.
So my take is that he has gotten past the nervousness, the putting, and the mental mistakes and I truly believe that he's now ready to win. I'm going out on a limb and saying that he wins the Masters this year.

And yes, I am a member of the supreme optimists club.

Make Your Chipping Great Again

As I was watching Tiger's super short game prowess, I noticed a difference in his chipping technique. He's gone back to basics, and it happens to be the method that I use and teach.

For his stock chips, he has been using a lot of shaft lean at setup, and he has been carrying that angle through the strike. In plain English, he's setting his wrists early for forward shaft lean, and holding that angle through the strike.

He's also using body rotation more than arm power for the weight of the stroke.

Here's a very simple way to achieve this easy to repeat and execute stroke for a stock chip - a chip that has a decent lie to begin with and a reasonable amount of green to work with:
  • Set up with the ball just to the rear of center of your stance.

  • Shift your weight to 75% on your forward foot.

  • Lean your shaft forward and set your hands.

  • Rotate your body back then through to strike the ball.

  • Follow through maintaining the same shaft and wrist relationship that you had at address.
This will produce a crisp "ball first" medium trajectory strike that will check and roll out consistently and proportionally with the weight (power) you put on the stroke.

If you need to hit it lower, move the ball back in your stance.

If you need to hit it higher, modify your setup as follows:
  • Set up with the ball just forward of center in your stance.

  • Weight distribution is 50% - 50%.

  • Set the shaft so that it's leaning only slightly forward.

  • Rotate your body back then through to strike the ball, knowing that you need a slightly faster swing to cover the distance due to the increased height of your trajectory.

  • Follow through maintaining the same shaft and wrist relationship that you had at address.
This will produce a high trajectory chip that will check less and roll out more than the stock stroke technique.

Both techniques feel like more of a dragging swing than a hitting swing. Much less right hand involvement throughout.

Become great at both of these techniques and your short game will flourish, and I guarantee that.
