Tom's Featured Tip: New - Four Keys for Making Four Footers

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Most of us play golf for small (or large) wagers, and matches are often lost due to short putts that are missed.

If you've experienced cold sweats over short putts, here are four keys that will make your putting life less stressful. This is new mindset and technique advice from me due to the rule change mentioned below that should help us hole more short putts, enjoy!

New - Four Keys for Making Four Footers
  1. The main point of focus for short putts is the line of the putt as opposed to the speed of the putt. When you are determining your line, make it for a firmer than usual stroke. Said another way - your break and speed calculation should be weighted towards a straighter line with a firmer than normal stroke. Less break, firmer stroke.

  2. Pick a precise aiming spot about 6 inches in front of the ball and align your putterface square to that spot when you set up for your putt.

  3. Leave the flagstick in the hole (after January 1st 2019). This is a HUGE advantage on short firm putts. If you don't believe me, go to a practice green and bang short putts in very firmly with the practice hole pins in and you'll become a believer.

  4. Strike the center of the ball with the center of your clubface. This stroke isn't "lagging" the ball to the hole. It's a more firm strike on a straighter line than the lag line.
The rule change that allows the flagstick to stay in the hole without penalty (starting January 1st, 2019) has given us the latitude to stroke short putts firmer than we would have before. A firmer stroke is a distinct advantage in keeping the ball on line. It will take a little practice to get used to the feeling of stroking these short putts firmer than in the past, but once you get the hang of it your confidence will soar.

Use these keys for putts in the 4 or 5 foot and shorter range and you will make an enormously high percentage of these putts.

For longer putts, you will need to give more consideration to the break and speed calculation for your line, and your stroke will have a more normal feel.
