Tom's Featured Tip: Clubfitting - Follow Up Information

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Before I get started on feedback from last week's article, I did a little more research on lie angle adjustments as it regards to cast irons vs. forged irons. If you thought that cast irons could not be adjusted for lie angle, you were incorrect. They can, but it's pretty intricate as far as the heating of the clubhead and the bending irons that should be used.

Here's a link to more detailed information: Mitchell Golf - Facts and Fallacies on Bending Clubs

Here's some interesting feedback from last week's clubfitting article:

From Eric B., Pittsford, NY:

"Tom,

Saw your article on Club Fitting.

Excellent.

Just FYI.....

The nearest Club Champion location ¯for me would be in Pittsburgh I think (4.5 hr drive).

I went to this place Modern Golf ¯near Toronto a few years ago and had an GREAT fitting experience:

It's a few hours closer driving wise (2.5-3 hr drive).

Plus, I also loved that their hitting bays were enclosed rooms (unlike Champions I believe) where you have total privacy.

My full bag fitting confirmed that my irons/hybrids were right for me.

Fitter said I could spend thousands for a very marginal upgrade which obviously wasn't worth it. (I was impressed they didn't push an upgrade on me).

I did end up buying an M2 Driver which did in fact add about 15-20 yds to driver I brought with no change in my swing.

When I'm ready for new clubs (which might be when the 2019 upgrade comes out for Callaway Apex) I'm definitely going there!

Hope you had a very blessed and Merry Christmas.

Peace,

Eric"

My comments:

It sounds like Eric had an excellent clubfitting experience. Picking up that much yardage after getting fitted for a driver is probably the best case that can be made for clubfitting.

Callaway just rolled out their 2019 Apex irons (I play Apex irons and love them), and Eric will also be interested in learning that Club Champion may be opening up a location in Rochester NY very soon. I emailed them to ask about any plans for Western NY, and this is the reply I got from Chris Zaccagnini:

"Hi Tom,

The closest Club Champion location would be in Rochester, New York which we are hoping to open in March. If you need any additional information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you,

Chris"

So Eric, it looks like you'll have a closer option next time around.

ADDENDUM 01/12/19

I received this follow up email from Eric B. on 01/12/19:

Tom,

Your article sent me down a wonderful rabbit hole...lol.

In googling "Modern Golf"¯ to send you their link....I happened to run across this golf fitting place,TXG - Tour Experience Golf also in Toronto. Apparently they have quite the Internet following.

In doing more investigation, turns out people are traveling from all over the world to go see these guys (especially the founder Ian Fraser) So naturally I couldn't resist.

I set up an appointment with Ian Fraser: the Scottish guy in the video's below.

So even though I'll have a Club Champion just down the road from me by March.... I'm going to travel 3 hours to go see Ian and do a full bag fitting on Thursday 3/7 (Irons, Woods) and Friday 3/8 (Driver, Wedges, Putter).

They suggested, if I could accommodate it, to do the fitting over a couple of days to take "fatigue"¯ out of the equation.

So rather than one 4+ hour session, I'll do two 2+ hour sessions.

Should be cool!

Here are a couple of their you tube video's.
The second one is fascinating because their actually working with a high handicap golfer. I'll let you know how my fitting goes!

Peace, Eric

Joel R. had this question:

club fitting....Where can you just get YOUR clubs fitted....? Lie and loft for irons and My M1 tuned for my game. Or perhaps a shaft flex change. Everyone wants to sell you new clubs.

Hey Joel, first of all read this article Mitchell Golf - Facts and Fallacies on Bending Clubs to educate yourself on what can and can't be done.

Then:
  • google these keywords "clubfitters Buffalo NY", substitute your location for Buffalo NY. I got several interesting leads as a result.

  • Then get on the phone and ask this question when they answer: "I would like to speak to your best clubfitting specialist".
If they answer that their whole staff are trained clubfitters, ask them how they were trained. A good question to ask them is are they accredited through any clubfitter training organization. If their answer satisfies you, consider them.

  • Then ask if they can adjust your clubs as necessary after a clubfitting session if your clubs need it (and get the pricing), or if you have to buy new irons from them. A good clubfitter should have the knowledge and equipment to adjust any irons for loft and lie.

  • Don't jump on the first one, make at least three calls then make a decision.

  • Personally, I would opt for an individual clubfitting specialist rather than a big box store experience.
Joel, if you go through this process and eventually get it done, please let me know about the experience.

Thanks for the feedback!
