Tom's Featured Tip: Range Practice Session Outline

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I had a longtime student book a lesson last week. He wanted some guidance on how he should practice, so here's what we did for his lesson.

If you are an experienced golfer, you may want to copy it.

Since we weren't working on any particular swing problem, we did random practice as opposed to block practice.

Random practice means that you change something with every swing you make during the session; block practice means that you work repetitively with one swing and usually one club for several reps, concentrating on some specific aspect of technique.

If you know your swing and are fairly competent in executing it, research indicates that random practice sticks with you better in the long run. However, if your technique is not up to par, you'll need more block practice.

This student knows his swing well, and we started out with a few PW punch shot swings to make sure his impact positions were good, and they were.

Next, we took only one full swing with each club as follows, in the order listed:
  • PW
  • 3 wood
  • 9 iron
  • hybrid
  • 8 iron
  • 5 iron
  • 7iron
  • 6 iron
He went through this cycle 3 times, not rushing anything.

Next he hit driver, one swing for each effort:
  • hitting the sweet spot
  • hitting towards the heel side of the center of the clubface
  • hitting towards the toe side of the center of the clubface
He went through that cycle three times, using Dr Scholl's foot powder sprayed on the clubface for feedback.

Next he hit his 8 iron as follows, one swing for each effort:
  • hitting the sweet spot
  • hitting towards the heel side of the center of the clubface
  • hitting towards the toe side of the center of the clubface
He went through that cycle three times, also using Dr Scholl's foot powder sprayed on the clubface for feedback.

Then he alternated swings, hitting his 8 iron then his driver for 5 cycles and we ended the lesson.

We had intended to go to the practice green and stroke putts:
  • hitting the sweet spot
  • hitting towards the heel side of the center of the putterface
  • hitting towards the toe side of the center of the putterface
for three or more cycles, but it started to rain so we ended the lesson.

All in all, I'd say that he made decent contact on about 80% of his shots, which is pretty good.

He was really confident after the lesson, and he felt that he really gained greater control over his "clubface to ball" contact.

If you know your swing pretty well, try this practice routine for a session and see how it works. I think you'll like it!
