Tom's Featured Tip: Tip For Ladies, plus Changing Your Intention

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Tip For Ladies

I just saw some research that stated that a main cause for the distance off the tee difference between top level female golfers and amateur female golfers is - of all things - grip strength!

It promotes better downswing lag, which increases swing speed when done properly.

So for the serious female players reading this newsletter, to increase your grip strength you can simply use a hand exerciser. You can also perform weight exercises with barbells, dumbbells, and kettlebells. Exercises like shrugs (my favorite), and farmers walks will also increase your grip strength.

Just Do It!

Changing Your Intention

I had a lesson with a good player last week that was having difficulty obtaining a higher trajectory with his driver. He was on the right track to try to do that because his ball speed was excellent, but the ball was not carrying far enough.

We tried several "internal focus" technique adjustments without much success. He just wasn't able to do what I was asking him to do. I tried lots of different word combinations for two or three swing adjustments to no avail.

Here's what did work.

I had him close his eyes and visualize hitting soaring drives right down the middle of the fairway. He did that for a full five minutes.

Then I had him tee up some balls and hit driver, and the only five words I said to him before each shot were:

TRY TO HIT IT HIGH

Switching to the "external focus" of task solution by the students subconscious movement of the clubhead worked completely in this case.

He hit high soaring drive after high soaring drive like it was his job.

To me this proved that sometimes we can achieve great results by simply changing our intention without thinking about swing mechanics.

There are many ways that are more technical that should produce the same success, but the technique above (external focus) works quickly and withstands the test of time because the idea never changes.

I'm not implying that this would work every time for everyone, I don't know that for sure. I look at this as another tool in my teaching tool kit.

But if your game is stuck on some technique issue, try some "external focus" thoughts and see how it turns out.

I'm pretty sure you'll like it.
