Pre-Round Range Warmup
Before I get into today's topic, I saw a graphic on Bryson DeChambeau's stock swing carry yardages:
His carry yardages are unbelievable, and they are a testament to how a great plan and hard work can bring about great results.
================================================
I have four brothers, three of whom are pretty good golfers (one doesn't play). One of them read last week's newsletter about
random and block practice, and he
asked me if he should use random or block practice when warming up on the range before a round of golf.
My answer was random, and I gave him the pre-round range warmup routine I use when I have time for a range warmup.
Full Disclosure - You probably expected me to say I warm up on the range every time before I play, but I'm often
rushing and don't get to the range. I do make time if I'm playing in a tournament, and the one thing I never skip
pre-round is the
Thoracic Spine Matrix Stretch.
If you don't have a specific pre-round range warmup routine, use this one - you'll be well prepared for your round when you do.
My Pre-Round Range Warmup Routine Sequence
-
Thoracic Spine Matrix Stretch - I never make a full swing unless I've warmed up with this stretch
- PW - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - one punch shot then one full swing
- 3 wood - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - full swings
- 9 iron - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - one punch shot then one full swing
- hybrid - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - full swings
- 8 iron - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - one punch shot then one full swing
- 4 iron - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - one punch shot then one full swing
- 7 iron - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - one punch shot then one full swing
- 5 iron - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - one punch shot then one full swing
- 6 iron - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - one punch shot then one full swing
Then 3 sets of driver and alternate with the approach iron you anticipate using for hole 1.
For example. hole 1 at the Batavia CC is a 535 yard par 5. I usually hit driver, then a wood, then anywhere from a 7 iron to a wedge
depending on the conditions - wind and how the fairway is rolling.
For average course conditions my next swing sequence would be:
- Driver - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - full swings
- 9 iron - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - one punch shot then one full swing
- Driver - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - full swings
- 9 iron - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - one punch shot then one full swing
- Driver - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - full swings
- 9 iron - 1 warmup swing, then hit 2 balls - one punch shot then one full swing
Then give yourself 15 minutes on the putting green and you'll be totally good to go.
Try this you'll like it.
