Chipping Q&A

After last week's newsletter, I received several questions related to chipping:
  • How can I make my ball check and stop?
  • How can I make my ball check and run?
  • How can I chip the ball higher / lower?
  • Can equipment make a difference in chipping?
All are worthy questions, here are my answers, starting with equipment

Q: Can equipment make a difference in chipping?

The answer is yes, it matters because it can affect the amount of spin you impart on the ball
  • A high spin ball will check more than a low spin ball, everything else being equal.

  • A "cast" face on a club will impart more spin (more friction) than a "forged" face.
For example, I carry two wedges that have a "forged" face (PW and gap wedge) and two others that have a "cast" face (54* and 56*) and I select the one that will help me accomplish what I want the ball to do - high or low, check or run.

I also carry two different spin characteristic balls that I play depending on the hole I'm playing:
  • A Titleist AVX (low spin ball) for very long par 4's and for par 5's
  • A Titleist ProV1 (high spin ball) for normal length par 4's and par 3's
When it comes time to chip, I consider the spin characteristics of the ball when planning the shot and the club selection.

Q's"
How can I make my ball check and stop?
How can I make my ball check and run?
How can I chip the ball higher / lower?

Below are some basic technique and equipment answers to these questions. Keep in mind that technique, as well as swing speed, can be tweaked for more extreme results.

Most of the answers relate (more or less) to ball placement on your swing circle arc.

Your swing circle arc is the circular plane that your club travels on when you swing.

One big mistake that I see in chipping is that players sometimes tend to get their backswing and forward swing too flat. That usually produces a poor or inconsistent strike.

When I teach a basic chipping stroke, I like to see the target side shoulder rock downward a bit on the backswing, that will insure a circular swing arc. Once that is accomplished, the student can start using ball position for ball flight adjustments.
  • How can I chip the ball higher / lower?

Equipment: Use a club with more loft or less loft.

Technique: positioning the ball more to the rear of center will lower the trajectory, more towards the front foot will elevate the trajectory. Experiment for precision and to calibrate how much the ball stops or runs after landing.

  • How can I make my ball check and stop?

Equipment: Checking and stopping relatively quickly is very challenging. It not only requires a certain amount of clubhead speed at impact, but also the right ball and clubface combination for optimal spin.

Technique: For a medium to low trajectory chip that stops relatively quickly after checking, use a 54* or 56* wedge with a crisp stroke, ball positioned just rear of center, and do not allow any clubface rotation through impact. Hold the face square to the path.

  • How can I make my ball check and run?

Technique: For a medium to low trajectory chip that checks and runs, use a gap or PW, (or even a 9 iron or 8 iron) with a medium speed stroke, ball positioned just to the rear of center, and allow natural clubface rotation through impact. Do not try to hold the face square to the path.

Practice your chipping (correctly) and your scores will drop, guaranteed!
