Expensive Rules Blunder

It's almost incomprehensible to me how this could happen at the touring pro level but it did.

THE COST

The good news - Keegan Bradley finished in 5th place at The Players Championship a week and a half ago, and he cashed in for $820,000. Not too bad for a player who we haven't seen in a top 5 finish for awhile.

The bad news is that he would have finished in 3rd place for $1,380,000 payday if he hadn't been penalized for a rules violation. That's a $560,000 swing!

THE SITUATION

Facing an eagle putt from 70 feet on the 16th hole, Bradley marked his ball. A gust of wind moved the ball but not the marker. After it came to rest, Bradley retrieved the ball and placed it ahead of his original mark.

But according to a provision under Rule 13.1 D, Bradley was supposed to play from the ball's new location after the gust of wind. It cost him the two-shot penalty, and he three-putted and ended up with double-bogey seven.

BRADLEY'S RATIONALE

"I guarantee most of the entire field thought the USGA changed the rule to simplify it - put your coin down, that's where your ball is," Bradley said. "So I put my coin down, the ball moved, a huge gust of wind came up. I looked at the guys in my group and we all said, "Yep, the coin was down first, all good."

"I didn't think about it again until the rules official came up and spoke to me on No. 2. I'm proud of the way I handled that because that was tough news, especially with some tough holes in front of me."

RULE 13.1 D

13.1d(1)/1 No Penalty for Accidental Movement of Ball or Ball-Marker on Putting Green Under Rule 13.1d(1) examples of actions that are accidental include when:
  • The player takes normal actions near the ball before attempting a stroke, such as practice swings near the ball or addressing the ball by placing the putter on the ground near the ball.

  • The player drops a coin or a club, hitting the ball and causing it to move.

  • The partner or opponent of the player, or one of their caddies, unintentionally moves the ball or ball-marker, such as by kicking the ball, dropping something on the ball, or by pressing down the ball-marker.

  • The player inadvertently steps on the ball-marker and it sticks to the bottom of his or her shoe.

  • In these examples of accidental movement, the ball or ball-marker must be replaced and there is no penalty to anyone. If the exact spot from where the ball or ball-marker was moved is not known, it must be estimated (Rule 14.2c).

MY TWO CENTS

Regardless of what a player's opinion may be of a rule, there's no excuse for the whole group of players on that green - and their caddies - not knowing the rule. When you are playing for that much money you should absolutely know the rules, and if you aren't sure - like apparently Keegan wasn't - call a rules official just to be on the safe side.

The bottom line is - Know The Rules - Period!
