7 Mental Game of Putting Tips

There's no doubt about it, once you can set up to a putt correctly and consistently, putting is a very mental game. And with putting accounting for 30-40% of your total strokes, it's a big opportunity to lower scores.

Being able to use your imagination, focus on a positive intention and make a confident and tension free stroke without interference are the keys to good putting.

Here are 7 Mental Game of Putting Tips that have transformed putting for many of my students.
  1. Become An Artist With A Putter

Good putters have NO technical thoughts. They create a picture in their minds (the type of picture can vary from player to player) and they use that image to tell their body what it needs to do to turn that putt into a reality. It's a sensory and reactive process, not a mechanical, proactive one. For great putters, there's very little time between their last look from the hole back to the ball, and taking the putter back - no time for thinking - it's pure engagement with the intention for the putt. One of the greats, Brad Faxon, says "It's almost like I start my stroke before my eyes get back to the ball".

  2. Routine Is The Measure of Success

Great putters are able to let go of the outcome (before and after the putt), and instead, just commit 100% to the process. When you're overly concerned about whether the ball goes in or not, you are distracted and tense. The best way to putt is as if you don't care about the outcome. The players I work with use a mental scorecard to measure the success of the putt by their routine, not by the outcome. If you can do this, it will create freedom to focus your intention, make a fluid stroke and accept the outcome.

  3. Visualize Your Putts

Being able to imagine the pace and line that the ball is going to travel on, will tell your body what it needs to do with your stroke. There are several ways to do this that go beyond seeing a "movie" of the putt - so it's key to find out what works for you. Do your best to hold into the image, feel or sound, right up until the moment you start your stroke. This will "turn off" thinking and keep you focused on the sensation.

  4. Intend To Make Everything

Great putters try to make everything no matter how far away they are. There's no thought about the next putt, just the putt in front tracking going in the hole. Before every putt or chip shot, tell yourself "I can make this!"

  5. Use A "Trigger"

Watch any top player and you could put a stopwatch to their routine and it would be the same every time. There's no hesitation, it's a repeatable sequence. Something that can help with this is a "trigger" to start your stroke. Once your putter goes behind the ball, you do the same things to stay athletic and not get stuck.

  6. Manage Tension

Keeping grip pressure light is absolutely key to allowing the putter to move with freedom. There shouldn't be much tension in your hands, forearms and biceps when you're over the ball. Watch players like Patrick Cantlay and you can see that the arms hang loose and grip pressure is soft to make sure it's the shoulders that create the pendulum and there's maximum feel in the hands.

  7. Control Tempo and Rhythm

Rhythm and tempo is another (and underestimated) key to consistent putting, especially under pressure. There are several ways to train tempo which can help you keep it consistent no matter how much you have riding on a putt.
Keep these factors in mind and you'll become a better putter. If you need help, contact me for a lesson and you will become a better putter.
