Putting - Stroke Execution Routine

I got some great information while listening to and taking notes on a "The Sweet Spot" podcast interview with Sasha Mackenzie, a renowned Sports Biomechanics Professsor at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Canada.

He was discussing the merits of heads up putting, and it influenced me to change the stroke execution routine that I teach ro my students.

Heads Up Putting, also known as Instinct Putting (search at Amazon and you'll find a couple books on that - I just ordered Instinct Putting Revisited) was discussed and there were a few facts that made me lean back towards this technique. It's essentially looking at the hole while you putt. I tried it in my last round of 2021 and putted pretty well, but my comfort level with it was a little shaky.

I'm going to putt that way this year

I made note of a few points of discussion that really got my attention during the podcast:
  1. First of all, he did caution that it may not be helpful for all players, but then he laid out some very convincing points.

  2. That a full 80% of his students putted better from 11' with the heads up method vs. the traditional heads down method.

  3. Why stare at the ball when all the information is between the ball and the hole.

  4. Speed control improved, centered face strike did not, but path and impact spot on the face don't matter at all.

  5. Bad putters might miss 1 out of 100 11' putts due to path variability.

  6. Face control applies to 87-95% of putting accuracy, it defines the direction that the ball is going to start on.

  7. As soon as you take your eyes of the far target (the hole). your memory of that distance starts to decay exponentially, which translates to forgetting how hard you need to hit the ball. Your probability of gauging effort goes way up when you are looking at the far target.

  8. Heads up - variability on speed improved, no difference in face angle, no difference in path, variability in head position decreases
So I'm adjusting my instruction for putt execution as follows:

Stroke Execution Routine

For Those Who Favor Looking At The Hole
  1. Take three or more practice strokes behind the ball, looking at the hole and visualizing the ball rolling into the cup.
  2. Take three or more practice strokes next to the ball, 8 inches to the side, looking at the hole.
  3. Step into the ball, take your stance, and execute this four step sequence:
    1. Target - stare it down (3 seconds)
    2. Glance at the ball, make sure your face is square to your line
    3. NEW Then look at your target and stroke the putt
    4. Hold your finish.

  3. Step into the ball, take your stance, and execute this four step sequence:
    1. Target - stare it down (3 seconds).
    2. Look back down at the ball slowly.
    3. NEW As soon as your eyes return to the ball commence your backswing immediately.
    4. Hold your finish.
Try looking at the hole when you putt, I think you'll like it!
