The Process For Fixing Faults

I had a longtime student - Jeff - call me with a problem the other day, and I want to go through the process that we used to figure out the problem and the fixes. We did it via phone and text.

This particular student knows how to express the problem correctly, which was that his shots were at a normal trajectory, and starting right and staying straight.

There's an old saying that applies to faults and fixes - a problem defined is a problem half solved

In order to diagnose a problem yourself, you need to observe the direction that the ball starts on and how it curves.

This is important to know and understand:
  • A ball starts in a certain direction due to the clubface pointing that way (driver MAY be an exception due to gear effect).

  • Top image - the ball will curve left, clubface is closed to path

Bottom image - the ball will curve right, clubface is open to path

  • A ball curves in the direction the face is pointing in relation to the direction of your swing path.

  • If the clubface and swing path match in direction, the ball will not curve.
The important things that Jeff's ball flight disclosed were that his clubface was pointing right at impact and that it was square to his swingpath. That produces a ball that starts right and stays straight.

The solution for Jeff involved having the clubface square up better at impact, and/or having the club approach impact at less of an outward swinging angle. One quick fix I suggested was moving the ball a little forward in his stance at address.

Another thought that I had was that perhaps his downswing plane was too vertical compared to his backswing plane, possibly due to a flying elbow. So the first drill I suggested was hitting balls with a clubhead cover tucked under his right armpit to prevent his right elbow from flying in his downswing and creating a too vertical path with an open clubface.

There was also the possibility that his head was moving laterally just prior to impact, so I forward him this drill: Video - The Head Against The Wall Drill

The last thing that I suggested was to make sure that he keeps turning through impact, that he doesn't stop his rotation at the hit.

Before writing this issue, I called and asked him what worked. He told me that he went out to his yard and tried the clubhead cover under the armpit drill, and immediately thought I was a genius because it cured his problem.

I'm certainly not a genius, but I do know how to start thinking about a fix to a problem based on ball flight.

The takeaway is to understand the principles of ball flight mentioned above, and you'll be on your way to figuring out answers to your swing problems too.
