Alignment Adjustment For High, Accurate Drives
To get maximum carry from your driver, you have to launch it high. To make that beautiful high drive land somewhere near where you want it to, there's one alignment tweak that needs to take place.
Let me back up for a second.
When we swing the club at the ball, the swing path generally travels:
- Downward and Outward as it approaches impact
- Flat and Straight for a brief period of time through the strike
- Then Upward and Inward as the follow through takes place
- Down and to the right (downswing)
- Flat and straight (impact)
- Up and to the left (follow through)
Another way to express this is that you catch the ball on the up and to the left part of your swing arc.
So if you catch the ball on the up and left part of your swing arc, it should travel left of your target to some degree.
Here's the simple alignment tweak to make the up and to the left swing go straighter towards your target. Simply align your stance so that your ankles, knees, hips, and shoulders are pointing slightly right of your target, while maintaining the same ball position relative to your front foot.
So if you want to hit it high and accurate:
- tee it high,
- play it forward in your stance,
- and align your body slightly right of your target line.
