Super Effective Winter Putting Practice

I often get the question "Tom, what should I practice over the winter"?

I've written about winter practice before, but today I want to give you one idea that will improve your putting dramatically. It's relatively simple, relatively inexpensive, relatively easy, and the results will be lower scores due to improved putting.

  • You are probably expecting me to give you some advice about improving your putting stroke, but I'm not because it's a secondary consideration as far as I'm concerned.

Your stroke can be inside out, outside in, arcing, straight back or straight through, etc, and with any of those intentional - unintentional - swing paths, you can still putt well as long as the face of your putter is aligned squarely to your target at impact.

  • To absolutely improve on your putting, practice putting "while looking at the target" over the winter. Whether you continue to look at the target while putting when you actually play will be up to you. I recommend that (after you have a good comfort level with it), but even just practicing that way will result in improved putting.

You'll need a putting ramp, or even better - get a long strip of light grey indoor outdoor carpeting - as long as you can fit into your practice area. Draw 4.25" circles on it with a black magic marker to represent holes, at 8' then every 3' (offset) for the length that your space permits. Color in the circle with black magic marker and use a short piece of 2"x4" wood placed 10" behind the hole as you practice at each distance.

The objective will be to roll the ball over the hole and have it come to rest just as it touches the 2"x4".

    1. Take two or three practice strokes behind the ball while looking at the target.
    2. Take two or three practice strokes while looking at the target, standing alongside of, but away from, the ball.
    3. Step into your stance, look at the target, glance at the ball and make sure the face is aligned correctly, look at the target again and stroke your putt while still looking at the target.

  • The best case scenario would be a practice area where you could putt to a different length hole with each putt. If your practice area space doesn't allow for that do the best you can - but practice stroking the putt while looking at the target for each and every putt during your practice sessions and I GUARANTEE that your putting will improve!

Two or Three 15 minute sessions per week.

Try it, you'll love it.
