How Many Wedges Should I Carry In My Bag?

I get this question quite often from students, and it's a really good question.

In this day and age of pros carrying four or even five wedges in their bag, it's pretty natural for any new player to think that they should carry that many wedges too if they want to play well.

That may be a good thought if you were not limited to fourteen clubs in your bag.

In another newsletter article I mentioned that the prime indicator of golf potential is distance off the tee.

Similarly, the distance you hit the ball should be reflected in your bag setup.

If you hit the ball long, you'll need fewer clubs between your driver and pitching wedge than if you are a short hitter. That leaves room for more wedges.

Short hitters are going to need more woods and hybrids than a long hitter. For your overall scoring, those clubs will be more useful than more wedges.

As you age, your bag makeup will need to change as your distance naturally decreases. Be honest with yourself and adjust your bag accordingly.

Here are the wedge carry guidelines that I provide to my students. The degree (*) recommendations may be adjusted by one or two degrees at your discretion to maintain proper gapping.
  • If the carry distance for your PW is 135 yards or more, you should carry four wedges:
    1. PW
    2. Gap Wedge (50*)
    3. Sand Wedge (56*)
    4. Lob Wedge (60*)
  • If the carry distance for your PW is less than 135 yards, you should carry three wedges:
    1. PW
    2. Sand Wedge (54*)
    3. Lob Wedge (58*)
  • If you don't hit your PW more than 100 yards, you should be able to get by with two wedges:
    1. PW
    2. Sand Wedge (56*)
The two wedge makeup will be most efficient if you have the knowledge on how to adjust your ball flight trajectory as necessary. If you don't know how to do that, see me for a lesson.

Your sand wedge should have a lot of bounce - 12* to 16* - , and if you are a four wedge player you should have two lob wedges at your disposal. One with a lot of bounce for playing a course with soft forgiving fairways, and one with very little bounce for hard fairway conditions.

Getting the correct bag makeup for your clubs is a critical success factor in golf.

Get it right and you'll really like it.
