Inside - Out Downswing Path

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Two Great Training Aids For Indoor or Outdoor Practice

The Divot Board

This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own.

Inside - Out Downswing Path

This winter I've been working with several students, and to a person we've been concentrating on one specific aspect of their swing - an inside - out downswing path.

If that path can be developed, it adds:
  • More swing speed
  • More consistent ball striking
  • More consistent curvature
All of which are prerequisites to play your best golf.

The best keys for that to happen are:
  • Awareness
  • The position of your right elbow in your backswing and your downswing.
Common backswing errors as it relates to the right elbow:
  • Starting your backswing like you are pull starting a lawn mower, with your elbow moving behind your body.
  • Your right elbow moving too far to the outside, like you are nudging someone alongside of you.
  • Your right elbow lifting too high.
The optimal position for your right elbow in your backswing would be pointing downward, not to the rear or to the side. Ideally it would be in the same position as if you were carrying a tray of food - elbow down, forearm perpendicular to the ground.

Not everyone has enough flexibility in their shoulder joint to accomplish that (I don't, so I'm working on my own shoulder flexibility). So as a work around you need to make sure that in your downswing, your right elbow returns close to the front half of your right rib cage before it extends through impact.

Not just directly to your side, but to the front part of your side, and make sure that the spacing between your elbows remains the same throughout your swing. This will keep your club on the proper plane, help you avoid casting the club (an outside - in path) and losing your lag, and it will keep your center of gravity balanced.

I train my students with a Tour Striker Smart Ball for elbow position

and width, but you could use any kind of ball for the same purpose.

You can also work on an inside - out path with one handed right handed swings, no ball, just observe that your downswing path comes from the inside - not down the line or over the top. Use a constraint like a pool noodle to insure that your path is correct, then make swings with both hands and a smart ball and repeat the inside - out path.

You owe it to yourself to get good at this. Make time now for 10 minute swing sessions done three times per week, and you'll thank me when you play this year.

Try it you'll really like it.
