Two Rainy Day Golf Hacks

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

This year I'm making a concerted effort to play more often, and if that means playing with a chance of rain, so be it.

Now I'm not keen on teeing off in the rain, but if it rains after I've already started a round, I'm finishing unless there's lightning or the rain turns into a monsoon.

That was the case the other day when I teed off early, but on one of those hot days where it was already in the 70's at around 7:30 am.

A light to medium strength rain started to fall at around 9 am, but it actually felt refreshing so everyone played on.

My playing partner had hit a ball from an area where the ground was a bit saturated with water, and he hit it very fat. I then told him to change something and hit another ball (we weren't playing for anything significant).

He nutted the 2nd shot.

Rainy Day Hack # 1

I told him that since his feet were sinking a bit into the wet, saturated ground, to choke down on his club because his lower feet depth also made his clubhead hit the ground sooner. A lower swing arc radius compensated with a choked down grip equalled normal depth contact.

It worked like a charm.

If you have a stance on soft ground during or after rain, grip down on the club for better contact.

Rainy Day Hack # 2

Another player in our group was complaining that his glove was all wet and he couldn't get a grip on his clubs.

It's always a good idea to have an all weather golf glove in your bag, but if you don't, at least carry a handkerchief.

If it's raining and you are having trouble getting s good grip on your clubs and you have a handkerchief available:
  1. soak the handkerchief in water
  2. wring it out
  3. wrap it around your grip
  4. grip the club with bare hands, it will feel like your hands are glued to the grip
One of the guys said that it was against the rules to do that, but he was wrong.

Rule 4-3 (a) 5 specifically allows a towel or handkerchief to be wrapped around a grip.

4-3 (a) 5 Gloves and Gripping Agents.
Allowed.
  • Using a plain glove that meets the requirements in the Equipment Rules,
  • Using resin, powders and other moisturizing or drying agents, or
  • Wrapping a towel or handkerchief around the grip.
Not Allowed.
  • Using a glove that does not meet the requirements in the Equipment Rules, or
  • Using other equipment that gives an unfair advantage with hand position or grip pressure.
Try these hacks if you get caught in the rain, you'll like it.
