Effective "Variable Practice" Drills

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I've received several emails asking me for specific drills for variable or random practice.

Just as a refresher - variable or random practice means changing up your club or swing intent from shot to shot, whereas block practice means hitting the same club over and over again to ingrain a swing pattern.

You need both.

Block practice builds a pattern, then when your swing pattern has been sufficiently developed (not necessarily perfected), you should introduce variable or random practice into your practice sessions.

Research has shown that variable or random practice is a superior way to learn and retain a skill, but without a block practice foundation of swing pattern movements it's not as functional.

If you are pretty well settled into your desired swing pattern, here are some ideas for some variable practice to help you increase your swing awareness as it relates to:
  1. Tempo
  2. Curvature
  3. Setup
  4. Swing shape
TEMPO

On the range hit shots at 20%, 50%, 80%, 100%, and 110%. (20% and 110% are the crucial ones)

Really try to hit it slow and see if you can only hit a 7 iron 50 yards or less with 20% tempo.
  • What did you learn?
  • How did your backswing feel?
  • What did you notice about your quality of strike at a slower speed?
CURVATURE

No matter what your stock shot is, try to hit the biggest slice you can and biggest hook you can with a 3 wood, then your 5 iron, then your 7 iron.
  • Was one easier than another for you?
  • How many swings did it take you to execute each type of shot?
SETUP

Hit shots with a 6 iron with these different set ups:
  • Ball position middle of stance. Ball position off front foot. Ball position off back foot.
  • Ball farther away so arms are extended. Ball closer than normal to body. Ball in normal position.
  • Hit a shot where you line your body up 20 yards left of the target - then try to hit it at the flag. Do the same to the right of the target. Then line up straight at the target
SWING SHAPE
  • Take the club back normally, take it more outside, and then take it back inside.
  • Then take a normal backswing and try to move your path to the right, normal, and to the left.
  • How did each feel and what happened to your ball flight?
Do enough of these drills and you will develop confidence in your swing awareness, as well as cause and effect. That will give you a powerful physical and mental advantage over most of your competition.

Try it, you'll like it.
