DIY Backswing Posture Training Aid

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Recently I've had a couple of students - one experienced, one a novice - who were standing up in their backswing instead of turning around a side tilted spine. This caused them to disrupt their "levels" for the swing pattern that I teach.

Here are few reasons why standing up in the backswing happens:
  1. Lack of side bend/tilt. Loss of posture is simply a change in elevation (level) or posture during the backswing. This gives the impression of "standing up", but "standing up" is really a lack of what is called side bend or side tilt.

Many golfers have been told to rotate their spine, but neglect the direction that the shoulders should point - front shoulder down - in a proper backswing turn.

  2. Lack of arm rotation. Frequently players will not side bend because it means that they don’t have to rotate their arms as much and it puts less stress on their upper back.

  3. Grip Another common reason to stand up is when the grip is too much in the palm and you can’t hinge or set your wrists.
I used to have my students do reps of Video - The Head Against The Wall Drill to correct that problem. It's a simple drill where the student leans their head against a wall while in golf posture, arms across their shoulders, then executes an abbreviated backswing and through swing.

Their weight against the wall forces them to maintain side tilt during their backswing.

As I reflected on this drill, I decided to develop something more effective because:
  1. Even though it's good enough for the feeling that you aren't standing up in your backswing, it lacks permanence because it does all the work for you.

  2. You can't hit balls during the drill.
Through some research and trial and error, I came up with a much better setup for a similar drill where you can monitor your posture and actually hit balls.

Here's what the setup looks like (photo from an actual lesson):

When the student executes his/her backswing, they get immediate feedback if they raise their body up, PLUS you can actually hit balls with this setup. It can also be very effective in your own backyard, just swinging the club - even if you aren't hitting balls.

You can pay hundreds of dollars for a training aid similar to this, OR you can make one easily yourself by buying a spiral fishing rod holder (Google it $2.50 - $8.00), a fiberglass driveway marker at Home Depot for a few bucks, and a pool noodle from the Dollar Store.

It's an extraordinarily cheap price to pay for a home made training aid setup that will provide substantial swing benefits.

Try it, you'll really like it.
