Three Keys That Helped Brian Harmon Win The British Open & Palmar Cooling

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I just read an article on several things that Brian Harmon discovered with his coach, Justin Parsons, that were instrumental in Brian winning the British Open.

Harman hit 75 percent of the fairways and 66 percent of the greens on his way to The Open title.

Paying close attention to a simple fundamental - alignment - played an essential role in his excellent ballstriking.

Parsons noticed Harman, a lefthander, had a tendency to aim too far to the right, which produced weak shots to the left.

And like most players, the more the ball went right of the target, Harman aimed even farther left.

As a teaching professional, I've observed this all too common tendency firsthand in my own students. One way pros and better players set themselves apart is by paying close attention to the smallest details, every day on every shot.

Harman also led the field in putting at The Open, averaging 1.5 putts per green in regulation. He monitored his stroke on the practice green before each round with a mirror he bought online that encouraged more of an arc in his stroke.

His tendency is to take the putter back straight with a shut face, slightly move his head through impact and open the putter face, creating a weak roll.

Using the mirror to reinforce his fundamentals allowed Harman to swing the putter freely with confidence.

Mirrors are fine, but I get the same solid strike result from my students with two 2"x4"s with the Short Putt Channel Drill

The final piece was revealed in something Harman told Parsons after he won the Claret Jug.

Harman said. "I was just focusing on what I could control."

Here's what we can take away from Brian Harmon to help our own game:
  1. Alignment and posture matter. You should be able to control these two fundamentals on every shot you hit.

  2. The key to great putting is not thinking technical thoughts on the course. Identify and address your tendencies with an instructor. Find a practice tool to help eliminate them. My words for this are "Own Your Stroke".

  3. On the course, or in competition, focus only on what you can control. Don’t worry about the rest.

Oh, and there’s one more thing Harman added to his routine the week before The Open and maintained through the championship.

He took five-minute ice baths (somewhere between 42 and 46 degrees) after every round. Ice baths are believed to produce resilience and improve dopamine levels.

Parsons said he noticed a calmness about Harman he hadn’t noticed before.

Out of curiosity, I googled "Do ice baths help athletic performance?"

Here are snippets of what I found.
  • An ice bath can soothe muscles, reduce inflammation, improve breathing, and give your mood a major boost. It's no surprise that boxers and top athletes choose ice baths as an important part of their recovery and conditioning.

  • Cold therapy, including ice baths, can decrease muscle soreness, reduce inflammation, and enhance recovery. When done correctly and safely, they can be an excellent tool for athletes and even those who do not work out.

That said, ice baths have a positive effect on the central nervous system, which helps you sleep and feel better. This, in turn, may improve your reaction time and explosiveness in future workouts.

One caveat: Ice baths may improve performance if you take one before working out on a hot and humid day.
If you are interested in the positive effects of thermoregulation and performance, here's an article and videos on Palmar Cooling. I've used this technique personally for my own workout routine. I simply keep a bucket of cold tap water available in my workout area and immerse my hands in it for three minutes between sets. It really works, but after reading the information and seeing the videos in the link below, I'm reducing the cooling time to 90 seconds.

If you workout at a gym, google "palmar cooling device" and you'll see some cool (pardon the pun) cooling bars that you can use on location. Having absolutely no sales resistance, I just ordered one from AvaCooling.com 😀 😀 😀

I'm looking for every edge that I can get as I age.

Food for thought. Try some or all, I think you'll like it.
