The Best Training Aid For Indoor or Outdoor Practice
The Divot Board
This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own.
Strike Efficiency: Low Heel Vs. High Toe
For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.
The difference between results from where the ball connects with the face of the club is really quite profound.
This shot went 248 in the air, and rolled out to 267 total. It would be classed at slightly low on the face (4mm), and heel-biased (11mm).
This next shot was very different.
It was struck slightly high on the face (4mm) and toe-biased (11mm).
This one went 272 in the air, and rolled out to 295 yards. That's almost 30 yards difference!
Here's why.
A high-toe strike benefits in a couple of ways:
- The toe side of the clubhead is moving faster than the rest of the club (especially the heel), so there was a slight increase in ball speed.
- High-toe shots tend to launch higher and spin less, that's a product of gear effect.
The takeaway is to monitor your face strikes with Dr Scholl'sFoot Powder sprayed on the face of your club, then work at producing a consistently high toe strike as follows:
- Spray the face of your Driver with Dr Scholl's foot powder
- Make intentional swings trying to hit the ball in the center face - high/low, off the heel - high/low, off the toe - high/low
- Observe the tee height and face location at address that gives you the high toe strike
