Cool Putting Training Aid That I just Bought

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I've always considered myself to be an excellent putter (you should too - 65% of putting is between the ears).

Having said that, two weeks ago I saw a putting training aid that I decided to buy and try because it looked so intriguing.

In previous articles, and if you've ever taken a lesson from me, you know that I put a lot of emphasis on having your putterface square to your target line.

One of my most common misses is missing breaking putts "on the high side". My playing partners always say " good putt, at least you missed it on the pro side".

True enough, but a miss is still a miss.

Well, since I bought ths training aid and used it for five rounds, I've made most of those types of breaking putts.

The reason is because the alignment marker tool that came with the package has helped me line my breaking putts up with a truer aimline.

Full disclosure: I paid full retail for the product and I make zero if you decide to get one for yourself. It may seem to be a bit pricey for what you get, but after you've used if you'll be happy with the few bucks you spent, and you'll wonder why no one invented this before.

Enough suspense, it's called The Devil Ball and you can get it at PuttOutGolf.com

When you get there, you'll see a ball with a square side that serves the purpose of getting your putter face aligned square to your target line. You get two balls, and I used them with effectivly on my backyard artificial turf practice green. They are very useful for putts of about six feet and in to check the roll of your stroke. In my opinion, you don't need to roll putts from any longer distance to see if your stroke is putting a good roll on the ball.

Although the Devil Ball is the main focus for their sales, I found the alignment marker to be unbelievaby effective when I play. In fact, I contacted them to see if I could order several alignment markers separately, but they said they weren't set up to sell them a la carte.

When using the alignment marker, I take great care to set the lines up precisely. The result has been that I've been putting "lights out" because my aimpoint for breaking putts has been on a much better line than when I was setting it up without the alignment marker. I had been allowing for too much break.

Here's how I use the marker:

I mark a straight line and a curved line on my ball, then I rotate it into the alignment marker so that the curved line now looks straight to the eye when looking down at the ball. Then I double check all the lines, remove the marker, set my putterface up square to the line, and put a good stroke on the ball.

I actually had some Hank Haney Impact Ball Liners sitting on a shelf in my basement (my wife would say "surprise, surprise"), that I now use in conjunction with the marker alignment tool. They absolutely were made for each other.

If you want your putting to improve too, try it, you'll like it.
