Pre-Round Range Warmup

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

In last weeks' newsletter I mentiined constructing a range warmup routine for the player I was working with.

Today I have some current research from the Golf Science Lab to help you construct your own effective pre-round range warmup.

Most of us have a warm up routine that's pretty locked in (unless your late for your tee time and just hope you have time to put on golf shoes).

It probably looks like hitting set numbers of shots with one club before switching to the next.

But some interesting research suggests there might be a better way.

Here's the study:

All participants began with a 15-minute dynamic stretching routine.

They were split into two groups:
  1. Blocked Practice Group: Hit 36 shots, 9 with each of four different clubs, in a structured sequence.
  2. Random Practice Group: Hit 36 shots too, but with a randomized club sequence, adding a sprinkle of unpredictability.
Post the warm-up, each golfer took a brief 10-minute break, after which they were asked to hit 9 "test" shots that mimicked a regular golf game. They also rated the quality of each shot on a scale of 1 (poor) to 10 (perfect).

Results: A Surprise Turn

The outcome was nothing short of astonishing.

The randomized warm-up group rated their first test shots at an impressive average of 8.18/10, while the traditional blocked group lagged behind at 4.23/10.

These results weren't just the feelings of the golfers. FlightScope data confirmed the quality, with the Random group's shots being closer to the target and having a better smash factor.

Across the board, the randomized group consistently outperformed the blocked group in almost every set of shots.

The Takeaway:

While we've always known the importance of physical warm-ups, the structure of a warm-up routine is a realm still largely unexplored.

This study provides compelling evidence that adding some randomness or variability to your warm-up can substantially enhance your golf game.

So, next time you're at the range warming up, add a little unpredictability to your routine.
