Backswing - The Right Leg

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Last week I was able so squeeze a round in with my brother in law, his buddy, and a friend of mine.

When we handicapping the match, my brother in law said his buddy was a 12.5 index.

The 12.5 index's first tee shot was a perfect high draw that travelled about 270 yards. His approach shot was off the mark, however, and he bogeyed the hole.

His next drive was repeat of the first, and I asked him if he was always hitting that nice high draw. He said no, that he was a slicer and decided to take a couple lessons.

I asked him if he was taught to attack more from the inside and to tuck his right elbow in his downswing. He said yes, and that he also tilted his body a little at address.

That's called radial spine axis tilt, in case anyone is interested.

After the round he told me that he would be in touch with me for lessons, he has a lot of talent and I look forward to working with him.

In my opinion, he's a 12.5 that should be able to get well into single digits, but one thing was holding him back.

The reason his good drives were really good was that he maintained a good 85* angle in his right leg (yellow line below) in his backswing

The reason for his bad drives and inconsistent iron play was that he would sway in his backswing to the point where his right leg was more in line with the red line above than the yellow line.

When a player sways onto the rear side, then does not shift their weight back to the correct point at impact to overcome the sway, many bad things can happen ie:
  • left pulls if the weight stays too much on the rear side
  • right blocks if the weight shifts too much laterally forward to the front side
  • very inconsistent low point swing location for iron strikes, producing fat and thin strikes
  • a bad angle of attack for irons
This is neither here nor there regarding sway, but the swing above looks like a centered pivot swing where the player is coiling his shoulders against his hips for power. Nothing incorrect about that, but it's hard on the back - especially as you age.

I prefer a swing pattern where the right knee straightens more (with the same good right leg angle) to allow for more hip turn. It's easier on the back, and provides for a longer backswing, which should produce a fast swing speed, all else being equal.

When I see sway in a student, I help them to acquire the correct right leg position by instructing them to feel like they are planting their right foot firmly on the ground during their backswing.

Every now and then, I have the student place a golf ball under the outside edge of their right foot to feel the inside of their right foot maintining contact with the ground in their backswing.

I may also stick an alignment stick in the ground near the outside of their right knee so that they feel contact with it if they sway.

I choose the cure depending on how they sway.

After about 25 backswing only reps, the student progresses to 25 full swing reps wthout a ball, then actual ball striking for 25 reps.

This has cured the sway with virtually every student that I've taught this way, providing that they keep doing the drill on the range until it's burned into their brain. The amount of reps that takes will be different for everyone, but you'll know when that happens.

If you sway in your backswing (look in a mirror to see if you do), you can correct it easily over the winter in your basement - or your living room for that matter, as follows:
  • 25 reps of backswing only
  • 25 reps of full swing
  • Do the swings three times per week, with folded arms, no club, in front of mirror to see that your right leg is maintaining that 85* angle.

Try it, you'll like it.
