Goals & Process Template

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

Over the weekend I received an email from a reader named Allen who asked me if I set golfing goals each year, and what I do to accomplish them.

Here's your answer Allen, I hope it may help you and others reading this article make a plan for improvement this year.

I haven't formally set goals for my own game for quite a while, because for the past six and a half years I've been busy selling artificial turf greens in addition to giving lessons and running my Junior Golf Camp.

Last year I left the artificial turf greens business and was able to golf a lot more, and I really enjoyed it.

So this year I'm setting realistic golfing goals, and implementing a process to get there.

2024 Golfing Goals: Lower my handicap index by one stroke, and to break par at least one time. My informal scoring goal prior to this year was to shoot my age, but I've got five bogeys to play with now so it's time to lower the bar. For the record, my plan is to live to be 100 and shoot my age.

Areas for improvement
  • More distance with my driver
  • Better approach shots
  • More consistent stock swing curvature
  • 95 mph or better average swing speed (driver) by April. If that seems low, please keep in mind that I was born in 1946
  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased dynamic strength
  • New 3 wood by April
Process that accomplishes the big goal
  • Play at least 36 holes per week - in season
  • 60 minutes of focused outdoor range practice per week - in season
  • 20 minute static stretching routine 5x per week
  • Adjusted dynamic strength training routine 2x per week
  • 4 session swing speed training program February and March
  • Brief swing speed training session 1x per week following the 4 week training program
  • Multiple half and three quarter length wedge swing repetitions between golf lessons
  • 1x per month indoor simulator session to precisely monitor downswing path direction and clubface position to produce a consistent draw curvature with my stock swings
The process may be adjusted mid season if any putting or chipping work is necessary, but these are my default strong areas.

Try this or something like it, you'll really like it.

My winter lesson schedule will be starting soon, I'll keep you posted.
