Minimalist Golf Stretching Routine

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.


I received quite a few comments after last week's article, and most of them stated that they intended to get started on an improvement process of their own.

I was really glad to hear that, then there was "Rick".

He wrote: "Tom, I'm really not interested in strength training or swing speed training, but I would be interested in a stretching routine that's not too long. Can you recommend something like that?"

Here's a minimalist golf stretching routine that's around 20 minutes long that can really help you and anyone else that feels the same way you do about training. If you perform it as it's laid out below, I'm certain that it will help your game, and who knows - maybe it will inspire you to also do some minimalist strength training!

Minimalist Golf Stretching Routine
Three Times Per Week Minimum
  1. The Thoracic Spine Matrix Stretch - One set - 3 minutes

  2. The Turner - 8 minutes


    1. Hold a wooden dowel or a pole across your shoulders, with your body angled for a golf swing.
    2. Make fifteen rapid, continuous full swings
    3. Then proceed immediately to the furthest point in your backswing and hold that position for thirty seconds
    4. Then proceed immediately to the furthest point in your forward swing and hold that position for thirty seconds
    5. Rest for 60 seconds, then repeat for three sets

  3. Cat Cow - 4 1/2 minutes


    1. Perform the top pose (cat), hold for thirty seconds
    2. Perform the bottom pose (cow), hold for thirty seconds
    3. Rest for 30 seconds, then repeat for three sets

  4. The Hanger - 3 minutes

    1. Start from a standing posture, then bend forward from the waist with your knees slightly flexed and your arms hanging down, allowing gravity to stretch your back and hamstrings, hold for thirty seconds
    2. Rest for 30 seconds, then repeat for three sets

If you find out that you really like how you feel after this routine, bump it up to five days per week and you'll like it even more.

Try it, you'll really like it.
