Do The Ordinary Things Extraordinarily Well

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I was reading one of the self improvement email newsletters that I receive regularly, and I saw a phrase that applies well to golf, and specifically to a correction I made for a problem I was having when I was practicing at the Game of Throws Indoor Simulator last week.

Here's my personal quick list of some of the "ordinary" things in golf that we should all be able to do "extraordinarily" well with some awareness and practice:
  1. Grip
  2. Stance
  3. Aim alignment
  4. Body alignment
  5. Ball position
  6. Rotation, including the pivot
  7. Frame of mind
And for perspective, here's a list of some - but not all - things in golf that have more nuance to them than to be considered ordinary. These may require more study, practice, and or coaching.
  1. Your preferred swing method
  2. Weight transfer
  3. Backswing plane
  4. Angles of attack - horizontal and vertical
  5. Impact
  6. Release
  7. Forward swing plane
  8. Finish
  9. All aspects of ball flight, including launch angle, trajectory, and curvature
  10. Etc.
The reason I'm writing about any of this is because of a flaw I corrected in my own swing when I practiced last week.

I was working on my irons and the ball flight was consistently right and straight, which meant that I had to work my hands too much to hit my "go to" draw. .

The simulator indicated that my attack angle was from the inside, but that the face was open to the path at impact. This indicates that the clubface was not squaring up properly at the strike.

I checked my grip, alignment, and ball position, and all of that was fine.

After thinking about my rotation (pivot), I thought that maybe I was not continuing to rotate left post impact. When that's happening it's because the player's body rotation is "quitting" at the hit, something I often see with my students.

That slows the rotation of the face and prevents the clubface from squaring up properly at impact.

With that thought in mind, I hit about twenty more balls with more complete body rotation, and voila the majority of shots produced were consistent draws - with the added bonus of a bit more distance.

If your shots are looking like mine were at the start of my session - blocked right with a straight flight - try making a better turn through the ball and I think you'll like the results.

The takeaway for me - and hopefully for you - is to be extraordinarily mindful of the ordinary aspects of your swing, and to worry about more technical nuances later.

Try it, you'll like it.

My winter indoor lessons schedule starts today, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8am, 9am, 10am, and 11am, lesson details are here: Indoor Lesson Details - lessons by appointment only.
