Swing Fault - Too Much Hook

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

I was conducting a Ball Striking lesson last week with a senior player, and we discovered a not too common swing fault.

He had too much hook spin on his shots, the more common mistake that I see is too much slice spin.

I see "too much hook" as a more desirable problem than "too much slice" because this student is at least closing the face at impact.

Some of the most common causes that I look for when I encounter too much hook curvature are (not necessarily in order):
  • Ball placement - too far forward in the stance, this hinges on observing where the ball starts before it curves
  • Swing Path - direction
  • Clubface Position - in relation to swing path direction
  • Grip - position as well as strength of grip
  • Equipment - grip size or shaft flex
Being on a simulator helps me find the problem faster than at the range, because I can see the swingpath direction and clubface position numbers.

His swingpath was consistently inside-out, which is generally desirable. However, the clubface was way too closed to the path at impact, which caused too much hook spin.

This prompted me to check his grip position, which was very strong.

The Fix

I had him weaken his trail hand grip to a semi strong position rather than the overly strong position he had been using. This slowed down the clubface rotation and transformed the shape of his shots to perfect draws.

On a simulator this equates to a face closed 50% to the swing path angle at impact ie: at impact, a face that is closed 3* to a 6* inside-out swingpath.

The student then asked a really interesting equipment question. Since he has big hands, he asked if oversized grips might also help.

The answer to that is yes, because it will inhibit clubface rotation - everything else being equal. So he's going to throw an oversized grip on a spare 8 iron and we'll see how it works at a future lesson.

Try it, you'll like it.

My winter indoor lessons schedule is: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8am, 9am, 10am, and 11am, lesson details are here: Indoor Lesson Details - lessons by appointment only.
