Swing Pattern Repetition & Stress Reduction

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.

When I take my daily brisk walk I almost always listen to podcasts on various subjects. It's a great way to learn while you exercise, the ultimate in multitasking.

Monday I listened to a broadcast from "Golf in The Life" on advice for golf coaches, featuring James Sieckmann .

He mentioned one absolute gem of information that he got from Dr. Greg Rose of the Titleist Performance Institute on pattern repetition that I wanted to share with you.

The subject of swing pattern repetition came up and Dr. Rose said that there were two reasons that people revert back to old patterns, even when they are intending to do the correct pattern, and even when they know and can form the pattern:
  1. Inactivity - a long time off
  2. Stress - this can be stress in general, or golf specific during a round.
INACTIVITY

My personal solution to combating inactivity is to utilize the principle of Primacy and Recency.

Set up a schedule where you swing a club frequently, say every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but not necessarily for the same number of reps that you would during a normal practice session, like this:
  • 10 slow to medium warmup swings
  • 2 sets of 10 full swings, no ball, just concentrating on executing your personal swing pattern.
STRESS

Sieckmann wrote a book on stress reduction entitled Cool Under Pressure - How The World's Greatest Golfers Win The Game Within by Dr. R. K. Stutman and James Sieckmann. I haven't read it yet, but it's on my list.

He also shared a technique on combating stress on the course that he learned from a cardiologist named Dr. Bruce Wilson.

It's genius in it's simplicity. I absolutely will be using this technique personally, and will be teaching it to my students.

When you are presented with a stressful situation on the course:
  • Look at the treetops.

  • Take a couple deep diaphragmatic breaths (the stomach, rather than the chest, moves with each breath, expanding while inhaling and contracting while exhaling. Deliberately paying attention to each breath serves to distract and quiet the mind.)

  • Think for a moment about how blessed you are to be exactly where you are.
Therein lies the power of Breath, Gratitude, and Perspective.

Try it, you'll like it.

My winter indoor lessons schedule is: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8am, 9am, 10am, and 11am, lesson details are here: Indoor Lesson Details - lessons by appointment only.
