This is the most useful ball striking development training aid that I own.
Scottie Scheffler's Hip Slide
For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective.
Last weekend (and Monday) Scottie Scheffler continued his amazing winning streak with a win at the RBC Heritage Tournament.
Scheffler is the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 to win a PGA Tour tournament one week after winning a major. His total on-course winnings in the past 44 days, spanning five tournaments, is $16M, and his caddie has made more money this year than Rory McIlroy.
One of the interesting comments I heard from one of the TV commentators Sunday was that Scottie said his 15" hip slide on his downswing kept him from missing his shots to the left.
Here's why that helps, and other benefits to a hip slide as a downswing initiator - a movement that I've been teaching forever.
Why The Hip Slide Takes Away The "Left" Miss
When the hip slide is executed correctly, it presents the face of the club slightly open to the ball at impact and it starts the ball to the right initially. With a proper swing path (more on that later) and a good release, this will produce a gentle draw and the ball flight should curve back towards the target line.
When the hip slide is not present at the start of the downswing, often the face of the club is presented square to the target line - or slightly closed to the target line at impact. When this clubface orientation is present, combined with the friction generated by the release, the left miss occurs - and it can be a BIG miss.
Benefits To Initiating The Downswing With A Lateral Hip Slide
- It promotes shallowing the downswing path (having a downswing plane that is slightly underneath your backswing plane). Here's what that looks like and feels like:
if you had a straight up and down backswing and stopped your backswing at the top with the club pointing towards the sky, that would be a totally steep, vertical backswing plane.
Now if you pointed your right elbow forward and felt the clubhead dip downward, you would be in a position to execute your downswing on an angular, shallower swing plane.
When you slide your hips laterally to initiate your downswing, the clubhead dips downward, and your downswing plane flows underneath your backswing plane.
Your angular downswing plane would be underneath your vertical backswing plane, you "shallowed" your downswing.
In a good golf swing, the backswing is angular, not vertical, and the downswing plane should be slightly underneath your backswing plane for a stock swing.
- When you shallow your downswing plane, you promote an inside to outside swing path ( desirable) as well as a more natural release (less hand and wrist manipulation) to square the face at impact.
These factors, combined with correct ball position, promote a draw ball flight curvature.
- It also adds swing speed.
- And here's the great news - you can attain a shallower downswing path with all the benefits that go with it by simply initiating your downswing sequence with a hip slide.
You will need to figure out how much hip slide works for you - after all is said and done, golf is a game of discovery. That's where practice comes in, and you'll find out that you need more hip slide with your longer clubs, and less with your shorter clubs.
